Meanwhile, a new club has been formed and awarded the Surrey franchise area, as ‘Surrey 89ers’ become majority owned by GB legend Dan Clark, who was the General Manager at Scorchers. The ‘Niners’ – named as such because 1889 was when the modern county of Surrey was formed – joins the consortia of clubs in the new professional men’s basketball league which gets underway in September, and will still play out of Surrey Sports Park. “We are excited to have the opportunity to grow the sport of basketball in Surrey and build on the legacy of Surrey Scorchers,” Clark said in a statement.

Wow. And not in a good way. How do you launch a new club with no identity, logo, etc. Feels rushed, probably was. Does not inspire any confidence that this new consortium will be better that the crooks at 777. And with a month to go, no name of the league either but you launch a new team?

But the 89ers exist very much, so basketball does indeed remain in Surrey. But one of those teams isn't surrey it's just based it surrey

I don’t actually mind this change for Surrey. The Univeristy hasn’t wanted to be involved for a little while and used the leagues uncertainty as way to get out. The fan base is there, and with Dan at the helm they are in good hands. However they will of course need investment.
I also understand that London have new owners… and they are people with what you could say is great experience with running a basketball club. Could be huge for London.

Any source/information about the London new owners? Edit: Through some digging looks like there's a security agreement between Lions / Zalgiris Group on companies house, with Zalgiris "agreeing to extend certain credit facilities on the terms of the agreement". Lions to be a feeder club for Zalgiris?

No they should have done this the right way, with proper branding, ethos etc. Basketball fans deserve better.

I am sure Dan and co are doing all they can in the short amount of time they have to do their best. Let’s be real, the league won’t be what it was last season. Stop with the negativity and just be happy that good basketball people are doing all they can to put together a league.

No. But I hope Russ is in some way involved with the new league. He’s a great asset to British basketball. Zalgiris are now involved with London. Full details not yet known but positive nonetheless.

I'm sure Dan Clark (yknow, the guy who has top level european and international experience as well as a GM domestically) will be considering his options now Mr Whosit reckons he doesn't have an "ethos". I'm not usually one for "be grateful for what you've got", but in the situation we're in, it's testament he's been able to get anything sorted in the space of time he's had to get it sorted. He's a good basketball person with an impressive background (and his dad knows a thing or two too), if anyone will make a go of it I'd back him to be best placed. Bottom line basketball is still in Surrey. That's pretty much what matters as of 6.20 on July 31.

And as desperate it seems, launching any brand without a well thought out strategy is doomed to fail. Especially a new club in a League with no name. If anyone thinks this is acceptable, they’ve never ran or built a meaningful business. But this is British basketball so nothing surprises me!

Well I own a six figure housing business and an admittedly slightly smaller insurance offering so I'm not completely blind as to how it works but cheers for the advice. The man knows basketball. Top to bottom here and at the highest level. I trust he knows how these things work. The fact he doesn't have a logo will change in about 2 weeks tops and I'm sure he's well aware of the required ethos to build a basketball club. To say its doomed to failure before its even started is laughable.

Wow this Surrey thing I'm suprised at but relived they have in some way lived on as a new club like Plymouth did when they came back as the Patriots.
Last season I thought Surrey we're beginning to make some progress and win a bit more to despite finishing 8th place. I wonder if any other clubs will come back as a new version of themselves?

Looks like Lions are back, have been bought by Zalgris! Click hereFinally some real good news! Zalgaris is legendary and with a large population of Lithuanians in East London/Stratford should be interesting. Doesnt say which league and when are they playing. But fantastic.
