An outstanding signing, both on and off court.

Oh well looks like this time we're the ones having a player nicked. Glad to see him stay in the league but at the same time gutted that we didn't retain Kyle. Was a brilliant player for us last season and I felt he really stepped up as the season progressed. Caledonia fans are in for treat if he plays as hard as he did for us. I wish Kyle good luck and hope he continues to do well. Except when he plays against the Eagles of course. At that point he gets one cheer during his walk out and then we're against him for a the whole 40 minutes. We will certainly miss what he brought to the team last season.

Is it just me or is Glads recruitment kind of underwhelming?

So that's two Eagles fans who believe Johnson is a great signing and one who evidently does not. He feels a bit past his best to me and I don't really recall anyone raving about his performances last season but outside of the crappy three point shooting I guess his numbers were decent.
I'm not entirely sure what to make of Gladiators recruitment as a whole. It definitely isn't lazy. I don't know how they landed on a guy like Jovicic but it must have taken a hell of a lot more time and effort than just scrolling through stats on RealGM. Whelan was brilliant for Riders and if he's somewhere close to as good in Scotland he'll be a quality addition. Palyza brings a ton of relatively high level European experience to the table. DuBose looks promising. Excellent college career and has a couple of impressive pro seasons under his belt. And the depth looks pretty good. Not too much fluff among the 13 they've announced.
That being said, I'm not seeing a whole lot that looks massively out of the ordinary here. I'm not seeing a long list of players that other BBL clubs obviously couldn't have afforded. There's every chance they turn out to be a good BBL team. But the way some were talking a few months ago I was expecting them to look, on paper at least, like the clear cut best of the rest. And I'm not convinced they are that.

Palyza will be an asset for that team's European adventure

And I'm not convinced they are that. My thoughts too. It's not the sort of team that automatically screams best of the rest or really builds massive hype to fill the upcoming 20k capacity arena is it? Now if they'd kept Sloan, Tape and Durham and build around those guys with better pieces I'd be way more excited.

Is it just me or is Glads recruitment kind of underwhelming? all things are about perspective - there is a 13man squad where 12 of the players each night will be expected to get court time. happy for others to correct me - but this will be the first time that occurs. traditionally three or more of the 12 were only going to see the court if it was a blowout - and even then some despite a 20+pt deficit never got on. in a long season squad sport, its all about the sum of the parts - and this time the sum of 12 players not the sum of 7 or 8 or 9, so no I wouldn't call it underwhelming myself. I would call it a step change from the past practices. at the end of the day Gareth has to make the sum of the parts greater than the individuals and having seen his work so far, not got concerns about that.

I am also a little deflated by the rocks recruitment. I would however temper this by my lack of knowledge of the European market. It seems to be quantity over quality with an emphasis on players that can defend first and foremost. Only time will tell but don’t see anything that will entice me to make the trip to East Kilbride when I can watch from the sofa instead. Hoping I am wrong

Hoping I am wrong I'm living 15 minutes from the EPSV for Phoenix and this season thought about a couple of visits to watch European games but don't think that the Gladiators squad looks worth the trip. Eagles on the other hand could be tempting (Larry apart). Interesting that bigdunk isn't neccesaily excited about visiting the new arena, how far away would that make you travel?

The issue with signing 13 instead of 9 is that the extra cost of the extra players limits the amount of money that can put into the core group.
Depth versus quality : all about getting balance right.
and playing 12 in a game is extremely difficult. Only 200 mins.

Some of the views in here are absolute wack.
Did people honestly think the gladiators would go for nba level talent?
Weird people questioning the talent level of a squad with 2 Olympians, An mvp candidate 2 seasons ago, eagles most consistent player, a bbl all defence team, dpoy in macedonia and a strong returning core...

Travon Broadway Jnr averaged double figures in Macedonia. He lasted one week-end.
