I've been to a couple of their games and can attest to the crowds being as stated. They have a huge rivalry with Mohawks. Not surprising considering they are both playing out of Middlesbrough and for many other reasons! The atmosphere at that local derby was brilliant as was the presentation of the game. Easily on a par with most BBL games I've attended. Only the venue itself was lacking (mainly just because of age though to be fair). As long as they recruit well over the summer I would not be surprised to see them in D1 in 2-3 seasons.
They already have a very good front line but also a very good young guard who looks like he could go up through the divisions with them as well.

I was surprised seeing how its not the norm to have crowds in nbl3 and the fact they're only a couple years old, plus the racist comments the owner made last year.

It is surprising but they seem to be very motivated to make a go of it. I have no idea how many tickets are sold or possibly given away.
I cannot say I recall that incident you mention? It would need to be pretty big news to influence crowds. The basketball community in the NE is fairly small so gossip and bad news normally travel fast!

As a Mohawks fan I have to say Lions have a fantastic set up, we use to play at the same place in the late 90s early 2000 and regularly got 1000 plus fans.

It was during the taking the knee movement last year, I csnt remember his exact phrasing as he later deleted the tweet but he was essentially saying black people are just people with a sun tan. The basketball community were very upset with his comments

But is there an entrance fee? After the plummet from BBL to NBL3 for the Wolves, I was taken aback to only once be asked to pay (and that was only a quid!) to attend away venues. Wolves charge a fiver. Without a reasonable charge any NBL club can forget any decent fanbase. If you give something away most people will judge it as Barry White.

I've seen the crowd twice this season. Once was against local rivals and was more than 500. The other time was against Newcastle (not a million miles away). I paid both times in advance online and for me and my son it was about £12 I think? The aforementioned owner of Teesside Lions is not known for giving anything away!

Not sure how this has turned into a Teesside/Mohawks thread but great win for Teesside Lions away from home in Bristol and a heavy, if predictable, loss away to St Helens for Mohawks.
Next weeks match up with Teesside and St Helens should be good, particularly if Theo Turner plays like he did yesterday (34 pts and nearly 20 boards).

I’m sure both Steve and James would’ve preferred a massive local Derby clash!

Wolves similarly on fire early doors scoring 14 unanswered to begin the qtr final vs Manch Swarm. 70-55 by the end. Swarm were odd opponents - probably the worst kit I've seen since the old Washington Bullets, or old Denver Nuggets. Black shorts n white vests gave them a schoolboy look especially as several of them were quite rotund or even Billy Bunter-esqe. Wolves were good but not that good so it was puzzling to understand how Swarm had made the last eight. Next Sunday sees three seed Worcester hosting London (Millwall) Thunder after they upset two seed London Elite. I was initially horrified to think I may have to travel to Milwall for the semi so losing a sole regular season match to drop from two to three seed seems to have done us a favour. Don't mind if the Teeside bunch can knock off St Helens for us.

So Solly you get your wish….despite missing a starter through injury Teesside win 80-78 in OT. Brilliant! Have now seen Teeside Lions Facebook posts celebrating the victory and certainly seems to be a big interest in what's going on. Well done to all. Worcester will meet them in the Final after a fabulously entertaining chess match vs London Thunder. 31-39 deficit after a barren six minutes to begin the second half, but a 13-2 end to the quarter put Wolves in the box seat. Could have gone either way at the end. 57-56 up in the final minute and Wolves get two and a bonus but blow the FT. Now 59-56 and Thunder take a corner three, looking for OT. Ball bounces up off the rim and it's all over rover. On to Manchester on 23 April - should be the biggest crowd ever seen for the opening match of the weekend. C'mon ma boys!

Tees valley Mohawks expand *taken from the Facebook page* I’m pleased to announce that the Mohawks brand is moving further South as Scarborough Seahawks are the next team to form a partnership and change their name to Scarborough Mohawks. Tees Valley Mohawks have always had great relationship with Scarborough with former players Steve Race and Karl Seamarks playing for Middlesbrough / Stockton Mohawks in Mens National league div 1 back in the 90’s Scarborough players will now have the opportunity of playing for Tees Valley Mohawks in the National league Junior conferences as well as representing their Scarborough Mohawks team in CVL and junior local leagues next season. Club chairman Steve Butler says “ It’s great that these teams want to come under our banner, they see what we are doing and want to be apart of it, our plan is to expand more players in the Scarborough area, train them up so they can compete in the national leagues under Scarborough Mohawks. The club now have teams in Cumbria, Scarborough and Tees Valley and we are always looking for more teams that want to be apart of it. It’s a very exciting time to be a Mohawk as we continue to grow and have more players and teams across the whole of the north of England and I’m so pleased Steve and the Scarborough committee have agreed to join the partnership and look forward to seeing how the players develop under the Mohawks umbrella.” #proudtobeamohawk

Great castle, great fish n chips and all in all a nostalgia fest. But surely this will be another one man and his dog affair if there is little or no basketball history in the town. But maybe Teeside just ain't big enough for two teams.
