In a shock move, Zaire Taylor replaces himself as coach!
Worthing Thunder are pleased to announce our new head coach, Brian Deacon, for the 2024-2025 season.
Brian has a wealth of basketball experience spanning over 30 years at both Junior and Senior programs at various levels across Sussex, South East, and internationally.
We spoke with Brian about his appointment:
It’s wonderful to have you here. Why did you choose Thunder?
“To a certain degree it’s almost like a homecoming for me. I coached the U16 Premier team back in 2010-2012, where we progressed to the Final Fours, the same season that the U18s won the national champion accolade. It’s a club with a great history and a fan base that is second to none”
What are your goals for the next season?
“The team was unfortunate to lose a number of games by a few points last season, that to be honest could have gone either way. I have the opportunity to build on a solid foundation and deliver results for both the organisation and the fans. Coming in early means we can start work in the off-season and hit the ground running at the start of the season. I want to introduce a playing style that is great to watch and will get the Thunderdome rocking!”
Zaire Taylor, owner and former Head Coach, added:
“It’s great to have Brian onboard, and I'm sure that he will provide us with the impetus we need to have an extremely successful season. I’m stepping away from coaching to enable more work to be done on the business side. With the club expanding each year, I feel this is the right time to do so, but I’m looking forward to working alongside Brian and bring a championship to Worthing, as it’s certainly what the fans deserve”.
Keep an eye on our social media for future signings.

Charles Smith has signed as head coach for COB Rockets.

So here we are about a month from the start of the season and, once again, BE have issues with their licensing portal. What a total and utter cock up.
Players, coaches and officials cannot register.
What is the guidance for local/regional leagues.....nobody knows! It's basically sit tight and wait for BE's "digital providers" to resolve the issues on an IT system that is clearly not fit for purpose. Meanwhile they want to up our fees for a whole host of so called benefits that are largely not that much use to most people.
The problem with BE is that it is clearly understaffed. It tries to do too much centrally without enough resource. I am sick of being bombarded with the social media. Whoever does that is clearly pretty good...perhaps put them in charge of the membership/registration portal. It also relies on too many volunteers.
Presumably at some point it will be fixed. Then there will be a tsunami of people rushing to register. In the North East for example games start in the Durham County league on 5th September. Jnr NL cup games start a couple of weeks after that.
They need a plan B and fast...........

Let’s be honest, BE are not fit for purpose. They have little or no interest in their members, only in their status. They’re a shambles and should be ashamed.

Apparently 29th August is the big day. It’s OK though as BE have noticed most people usually register after this time anyway so it doesn’t really matter that THEY, once again, Fucked things royally right up!!!!

Ah be fair - they took a great interest in raising the registration fees... And for what in return I ask? Honestly it's beyond farce. I don't and won't be paying mine, but someone does...

And of course they can raise registration fees largely with impunity as they hold the monopoly. They offer very little in return. It is those who volunteer that make the game happen in England not BE. Without them our game would grind to a halt.
Sadly, players, coaches and officials have to pay the exorbitant fees or they can’t participate - unless you know different notoriousbigz?

I mean we're lucky enough to have sponsors pay so we don't have to. But that's not the case for a lot of D2 teams, and most D3 and 4 teams I'd imagine. At least officials get some kind of remuneration, but I'd argue their lack of development is a good chunk of the problem with the value for registration/fee wise.

So BE finally got the portal working and so far so good. Registering for those that have done it before does not take long....a few minutes really so if it carries on working there is no real excuse not to get a basic player licence.
I've heard noise from some refs already who have needed to upload new safeguarding/DBS stuff (due to it expiring) that they are having some challenges. One suggested they would simply not bother and therefore not bother reffing either. That person is a hardcore ref who has been doing it for years....he will sort it but it highlights the issues caused by placing more requirements on officials doing a less than popular role.
I personally cannot see that there is anymore reason a ref needs these things than any other person who happens to be present during a junior game (i.e. supporters). However if the requirement is there it needs to be dealt with promptly and this is where BE will feel the pain. Verification of those requirements as well as processing new members and verifcation of their age, nationality etc, etc....all that is a lot easier if that work was spread over a couple of months rather than a couple of weeks.
Life goes on though and hoepfully local leagues can start next week!!

Sounds good. The more people like Vince and Nhamo involved in the NBL the better. Words like pipeline and grassroots are good to see.

The NBL is stacked this year. MK and BH definitely making it stronger. Great imports and more BBL experience than ever will make it even more competitive than last season.
