Just starting this thread because the WBBL 23/24 news has already started.
As we know Sevenoaks Sun have withdrawn from the 2023/24 season.
GB Women captain and Euroleague semi finalist and former WNBA champion Temi Fagbenle has signed for London Lions.

Lions getting their GB quota in early - announced they have signed Savannah Wilkson who is heading to Eurobasket with GB - along with Temi and Holly. Any more GB players at Eurobasket unattached and likely to be announced to Lions soon?
Other news Gladiators have a big signing - new CEO but as its WBBL and BBL will do a separate post on that.

This Lions GM Vanja Cernivec was on a podcast recently, it's a good listen. One thing that stood out to me is that apparently it's the standard for women’s basketball in Europe to make your signings in January for the next season. Suggests they’ve probably had their 23/24 squad sorted for some time. open.spotify.com/show/5LrDuumJy0rKAH1uztVhRl

Gladiators after a couple of re-signing announcements, made two big statement announcements today.
First up was confirming the women will be playing in FIBA Eurocup this season. Next up was first new signing for the WBBL squad - tempted Kirsty Brown to move from Leicester to East Kilbride.
If anyone was unsure if actions would match words up in EK - the venue announcements, the CEO announcement, the BBL side entering Europe and now these two WBBL announcements , I think its fair to say the words are being followed up by the actions.
Going to be interesting to see what the final squads look like for both WBBL and BBL Gladiators.

That’s great news. London Lions have gone one better (of course they have). London Lions are in the qualifiers for Euroleague women. If they can win those two qualifier games they will be in Euroleague. If they can’t they’ll be in EuroCup.

Lions have signed Karlie Samuelson, currently playing in the WNBA for the Los Angeles Sparks!

So Leicester Riders have lost Kirsty Brown, Hannah Robb and Krumesh Patel. It’s good that our British talent is being concentrated into two teams to compete in Europe, but it will inevitably make the WBBL less competitive. Of course we can’t have it both ways. We have a shallow talent pool. Overall I see it as a step forward. What we need next is for one of our sports broadcasters to follow the two British women’s teams in Europe, and for that to inspire the next generation of female basketball players.

Manchester Met Mystics are now Manchester Giants Women. I don’t know what that means for their budget. Is this good news? More British basketball eggs in the 777 Partners basket. Maybe it makes Giants more attractive to a buyer.

WBBL started this weekend. Every one of the 11 WBBL teams played, with Manchester Giants playing twice. These are my observations.
1. Every game was streamed live on YouTube. Overall the production quality was pretty good. The best was Caledonia Gladiators with 2 commentators and 2 cameras. Manchester and Essex both also deserve a mention for having commentators. The worst was Cardiff Met Archers with no commentators and a camera from a very high position.
2. All of the arenas are good. Again the worst was Cardiff Met Archers just because it wasn't fully set up as a show court. The floor had all the lines for the other sports. All the other courts were tidy and I honestly can't criticise any of them. That's only half of the venues. We will get to see the other half next weekend.
3. None of the games were close. I didn't watch them so maybe some games were competitive but none of the final scores were close.
4. The BBC Sport website doesn't report WBBL scores and fixtures.
Overall it's positive. The teams all play in nice venues. Every game had spectators. It's impressive that every game was streamed. As the season goes on I will probably watch some games, but it's one of those leagues where you need to really pick the games you watch as most games are not competitive and half of the streams don't have commentary.

Round 2 of the WBBL. So far this season every game has been streamed albeit with very different levels of production quality. London Lions is the only team yet to host a game.
So far in terms of the live streams.
Newcastle, Manchester, Essex, Caledonia, Nottingham all play on nice show courts and the live streams have commentary.
Sheffield, Leicester play on nice show courts and the livestreams are good but there's no commentary.
Durham don't play on a set up show court and the camera is in the corner, but the commentary is quite good and it's still watchable.
Cardiff play on a show court but the floor isn't set up as a show court. And there's no commentary.
Oaklands. Not a show court and no commentary.
Still no close games but some games were close for 3 quarters.

London Lions are of course the best team. I think Caledonia, Sheffield, Leicester and Essex are the next best teams, and they haven't played each other yet. Unfortunately Sheffield, Leicester and Essex don't do very good live streams. Caledonia at home to one of those other teams might be worth a watch.

This game could be quite good. Not the best teams but it is the Nort East derby, they're quite evenly matched, and Newcastle Eagles always put on a good show. Durham have two star players; Janika Griffith-Wallace and Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby. Newcastle Eagles Vs Durham Palatinates - Saturday 7.30pm www.youtube.com/live/C3BCge4EdZ8?feature=shared

Good win for Newcastle. Durham only had one of their two star players playing. Griffith Wallace scored more than half of all their points. And they played with just 6 players. So the game wasn't as close as it could have been.
