Just read this on the BBL website for accreditation for the play offs.
In addition, there will be a special announcement from the BBL CEO, Aaron Radin, at the post-BBL game press conference. More details on this to follow.
A sponsorship announcement do people think ?

The scrapping of the Trophy, you know that competition that gave other clubs the chance to win!

League rebrand? Major sponsor? New franchises?
Any of the above would be great but I can’t help thinking these type of announcements are always a bit of a let down. But under 777 you never know.

If we're making predictions, I'm going with a major rebrand of the BBL.
Has anyone else noticed that on all the merchandise sold at the Cup and Trophy finals - jerseys, t-shirts and hoodies, none (apart from one t-shirt design) has included the current BBL logo or branding? It's been making me think a rebrand is incoming for a while now.

That is where people go to buy basketball merch.

When London Lions rebranded (still don't like the logo thingy, but love the 'LDN' branding) I thought how amazing it would be to get some merchandise in Primark... most wouldn't know it relates to an actual basketball team, but people would soon learn. Something like that would change the league overnight.

Didn't the league a few years ago when they had Spalding kits do a deal with Sports Direct who said they would sell club jerseys and then never did? I'll admit seeing basketball merch in Primark is quite bizarre but cheaper then spoets direct and I did buy a pair of Knicks sliders there last year for summer. However I reckon I have seen loads of people who wear Lakers or Bulls Jerseys as nothing more then a fashion statement or as part of a gym outfit. Who have probably never watched an NBA match or even aware of who the players name on the back is. I'm not sure if it would increase the awareness of the league much but it is better then nothing.

It's all about brand awareness. And if you do that on a big enough scale it doesn't really matter whether people are actual fans. You're selling the brand, not tickets to a game. That's essentially what the NBA (and NFL) are doing by doing deals with Primark. They're essentially being Nike, Adidas, Reebok etc. The BBL are obviously no where near that level, but selling some merchandise in Primark would get thousands of people to act as walking advertising boards for the league, which is no bad thing. Logistically I think the biggest problem would be that this would need to be regionalised. Selling London Lions branded tshirts or jerseys in all Primark shops across the UK probably wouldn't work. You'd need to localise it, London Lions in and around London, Leicester Riders in and around Leicester, Manchester Giants in and around Manchester etc. I could see that working, but it's also a lot more work for Primark, and so for that reason I don't think this is a very realistic idea unfortunately.

I agree with you most of the way. The NBA is a brand. Chicago Bulls is a brand. Where I would disagree slightly is with London Lions. I am not a Londoner but I do follow London Lions. And London itself is a brand. There are some cities that are a brand: London, Paris, NYC, Tokyo. I’m not sure if that is true of any other British cities. I could totally see London Lions jerseys and jackets in stores across the UK but not the other teams. They would need to be localised.

So, is anything significant going to be announced?
Or just confirmation of the things that have circulated already?
What do we reckon?

WBBL playoffs press conference was interesting. Riders coach sounds very keen to cut the weaker teams and strengthen the stronger teams. I don’t know if that’s a good idea or not. The WBBL has a pretty good geographical coverage with only West Midlands and Southwest England without a team. It would be a shame to lose that coverage.
They could consider a The Hundred type women’s short league with regional combined teams. For example a North East team with the best players for Eagles and Durham. It would be good for concentrating talent, but I’m not sure there is any commercial demand for it.

That would put Leicester in the South presumably. BBL Trophy will be 2 groups of 5 and the final will be in Birmingham. There was some talk of venues and getting them booked early but I wasn’t sure what that was all about. It might just have been to say they’re announcing next year’s format now so they can book the NIA, the O2 and wherever the All Stars game will be. Somewhere like Nottingham Motorpoint Arena or Sheffield Arena would be ideal. Right in the middle with plenty of basketball fans within a reasonable travelling distance.

The top 3 being in the South would surely dominate! Interesting they've said minimum one player per team. Wonder how they'd have chosen Lions to represent

But the BBL Trophy will be more similar to the BBL Cup because it’s only for BBL teams and the final will be in Birmingham.

amongst all the confirmed meh - I do like one change confirmed for next season: in the playoffs any team knocking out a higher seed, they will then take that seed number.
