There will need to be a good plan to ensure the other clubs can afford the flight and Hotel costs to play there regularly

Would be great to see although expense wise it may be difficult for clubs to afford the travel over and them to travel the other way. Although even if they don't join soon perhaps an exbition pre season friendly would be a good start.

It certainly works for ice hockey, but no other sport to my knowledge.

Love the idea but as said above the financial implications could be huge

Maybe that's why the franchise fee mentioned seems so high?
Is some of that fee to support increased travel costs for the other franchisees for a period of time?
If a new franchise in Northern Ireland can afford that fee then they must have some money behind them to afford a quality squad as well you would think?
Irish fans travel in decent numbers to the UK for ice hockey and always spend plenty in the bars!!
Would be good for the League I think

I do wonder what the cost difference would be between a Plymouth to Glasgow or a Plymouth to Belfast trip.
Could be cheaper to go to Belfast

In the past Nix have arranged pre season tournaments including teams from Ireland, did cause issues with a fast dash after the game to catch their transport home. Travel wise, some travel over for clubs is an expense but for an Irish club they'd have 20+ trips over in a season or a load of double headers which puts the team at a disadvantage fitness wise.

I just don't see why it's necessary. It's the British basketball league, not the UK basketball league so it's not as if there should be a team from northern Ireland in the league. I'd prefer to see a Welsh team first. I don't know if Ireland offers a cross border league or not but would think it would make more sense for Belfast to have a team in the Irish league, if they play cross border (maybe already do have such a team, no idea).

This is not news I ever expected to read. I don’t know how this can happen without being sanctioned by Basketball Ireland and by FIBA Europe. It might be more sensible to start by adding an Irish team to the BBL Trophy, or to replace the BBL Trophy with some kind of British and Irish Cup with a tournament format, or at least a short season. I’m not completely against this but it brings a lot more complications than, say, another team in Scotland.

Far easier for teams in the north to get ferries from Liverpool or Cairnryan with their bus than it is doing the drive to Plymouth or Bristol. Also probably one of the few realistic away days for fans given you can get flights to Belfast pretty cheap.

They probably should focus on their own league. Just checking the Basketball Ireland Instagram, Greg Poleon, formerly of Hemel Storm, was their player of the month for October. So maybe the Superleague is about NBL D1 standard.

Wasn't there talk of Birmingham and Reading also trying to join the league not to long back?
So far am only aware that Gloucester got pushed back but not the others. If them and a NI team joined that's 3 extra franchises which would spice up the BBL if it was to happen.

It’s a big city with a very big sporting fan base, if they can find a suitable place to play I don’t know why people are being negative about this tbh

It's not negative as such, more just that the logistics make it an odd choice for a location for the BBL. Even more so if the Irish super league already has a team - is Belfast a big enough market to sustain 2 teams and would fans care about a BBL team anymore than we care about the Irish league teams? If anything I'd ask if there is another city in NI that could have the team, if the Irish super league only has 1 team and it's in Belfast - why not put the BBL team somewhere else?
