'promoted' - clearly got promoted not by applying or choice given that statement by Mark Clark of disappointed not to continue. Surprised they dint say your gone at end of season and keep the promotion and departure quiet till then. Makes you think the replacement they have got lined up has said have me now or else I may be elsewhere when you come asking again.

Obviously a 50 point win in the televised final wasn’t enough.

Obviously a 50 point win in the televised final wasn’t enough. It was too much. He broke the WBBL.

Obviously a 50 point win in the televised final wasn’t enough. I think this 'promotion' probably just reveals more about how they regard the WBBL more than anything else. They'd clearly invested a lot in the hope/expectation that they would go deep in Europe. They crashed out pretty early so I imagine that's why the change has been made. Lions WBBL doing a pretty good job of being the most unlikeable club (not the players obviously, they're great) in the country at the moment. I just don't get what they're trying to achieve, other than boosting some egos.

Lions coach is no longer in charge, he'll still be involved though. What an odd time to axe/promote Mark Clark to another role. I'd love to know the full story behind this change.

Having had some time to think about this, and read everything that's been officially released, I think you're right. London couldn't have asked for anything more from a coach in regards to the WBBL. It's the Womens EuroCup that's been a slight disappointment this season. So yeah, I think the axing of Coach Clark highlights the organisations focus on Womens EuroCup, not the WBBL. Which is a shame, but having said that, once you've won 50+ domestic games in a row you probably do start to disregard that competition and look at what else you can impress in.

I think most wouldn't have been so upset if they'd left him in to the end of the season then shook things. They have nothing to gain from changing things now. It's very similar to when they axed Vince last season on the MBBL team.

They shouldn’t disregard the WBBL. They should acknowledge that it’s rubbish, buy it, and improve it. The BBL is good enough for London Lions Men to prepare for EuroCup. The WBBL is clearly not. Plus the WBBL is totally neglected. The production on the WBBL YouTube channel is very inconsistent. It’s very possible with good quality consistent coverage the league could have a niche audience.

The problem is nobody cares about the WBBL. There's very little interest in British basketball anyway, even less in women's British basketball generally (even though the women's national team is internationally more relevant than the mens) and even less again in the WBBL. It's sad but true. 777 aren't going to throw millions at making the WBBL professional (which is surely the only step up they could take) just to have crowds of 50 people turn up. I wonder what numbers will turn up to the upcoming women's GB qualifiers in Manchester? A few hundred maybe?

I don’t think you’re ever going to get more than a few hundred people watching women’s basketball, but I don’t think that’s the point. If the court is set up for match day what’s the harm in playing the women’s game first and streaming it on YouTube? If something is well produced some people will watch it on YouTube. There are some British women’s basketball enthusiasts who will happily do the commentary probably just for expenses. Of course there is an extra cost but it’s not going to be huge is it? If they can broadcast one game a week for example.

I hate myself for saying it, but why should they? They aren't a charity, they're a business. They can clearly see potential in the BBL that they can't see in the WBBL. It's sad, but that's the hard truth of the matter.

It's sad, but that's the hard truth of the matter. I can think of a few reasons why they should: 1. London Lions have no competition in the WBBL, so when they go to Europe they lose. 2. 777 Partners claim they want to make the BBL the number one basketball league in Europe. If this a serious ambition basketball would need to be one of our major sports. For our major team sports we also have elite professional women’s leagues. We have this in football and cricket. I’m not sure if our women’s rugby is professional tbh. But my point is, in the UK we respect and support women’s sports and female athletes. 3. The WBBL Cup final blow out is embarrassing. Why would anyone think that’s good? They should either support the WBBL or scrap the London Lions women’s team. The current situation is no good. The WBBL should kick London Lions out of the league.

Just for weekend games. In terms of being disturbed by people coming in, I guess that depends on the layout of each arena. You could have people taking their seats between quarters.

It is also possible that 777 are thinking, one step at a time. Let's try and get the mens team and league up to a standard we want, then we will work to bring the women's league along. Sometimes it can be too much to focus on if you try and do it all at once. Not saying that is their strategy but it might be and it would make sense I think.

Surrey Sports Park did exactly what I suggested today. Sevenoaks Suns vs Essex Rebels in the WBBL followed by Surrey Scorchers vs Manchester Giants. The WBBL game was broadcasted on the WBBL YouTube channel and the production was spot on. Congratulations to Surrey Sports Park for setting a high standard.

I remember Worthing Thunder used to do the same thing, either a juniors game or women's game would go on before the mens game, don't know if they still do it. It worked, you had at least 40-50% of the main match crowd in watching the earlier game too, which could mean anything from 150 to 400 fans, which is a decent number for that level of basketball. It's the obvious solution IMO. I don't think people coming in and sitting down would distract the players especially, as people are often moving about during the game anyway. It's not snooker!

COB Rockets in D2 have their WNBL games on before the NBL2 games when possible, but with various age group games they offer a full day of games. It does help that they effectively have exclusive use of their venue.

It's funny how people are saying Lions Women are too good, you can only beat who's in front of you. Perhaps if there was an investment from 777 to give funding to other teams in the WBBL, then maybe you'll see less one sided blowouts, might not happen right way, nothing ever does.
I think of a Football example that springs to mind, Barcelona & their Women's side, domestically they seem unbeatable. Won 30/30 in the League and won their Cups in Spain last season, Europe was disappointing.
This season they are 18/18 in the League
Yet, I don't hear anything bad said against them from people within the Women's game.
Yes, we all know why Lions are successful but I bet you wouldn't bear a grudge if your team was in the same position. Basketball needs bigger exposure in the country, it's easily accessible and if you want to do more to drive up participation then get out there, spread the word, try and encourage people to play, set up rec teams, give people something to strive for.

It's a good arrangement... now if only the WBBL team that plays at Surrey Sports Park were actually from Surrey, or from within an hours drive of it.
