Let's not get too gloomy about our forthcoming season. We have a very good set of guards already.

Let's see how he gets on with his temper and lack of outside shot. Wouldn't be surprised if he's back in Leicester at some point this season still.
I wish him all the best but he's not going to be the man, he'll have a role and that's it

He shot threes just fine last season. And I don't think Keith Williams referees in the German league so the 'temper' shouldn't be an issue.
Gutted he's gone. And I think it's a shame we couldn't get one European season out of him. But I always like seeing ex-BBL players go on to succeed at a high level. And this is a player I've lauded pretty much from day one. Hope it works out for him.
This might be a stupid question but I'll ask it anyway... Does anyone have a decent idea what this 'financial compensation' we've received from Gottingen is likely to amount to? Are we talking about a meaningful sum that could potentially help fund some quality new additions? Or are we talking about a cup of tea figure that will have absolutely no impact on our season?

I seriously doubt any buyout clause is financially significant
I also doubt we have big money salary waiting for a new point guard
All the real benefits playing for Riders are great accommodation, car etc
He was over with his family. We would have given him and family the best package we can afford
But we inevitably have a limit on salary we can pay
We would be most attractive to experienced PGs with families to relocate looking for education and career after basketball IMO

Before we don sackcloth & ashes and announce we are all doomed let's remember that Rob has managed to recruit talented PGs throughout his tenure at Leicester. Of course I wanted Crandall back but he's gone so now I'm excited to see who we hire as a replacement. Also, will Loving return or will there be a newbie there too?

This has been an issue for decades, guys getting better offers, sometimes mid-season. You can't really begrudge a player for wanting to back out of an existing contract to earn more or get a better career opportunity. If you or I had that situation we'd simply have to give notice to our employer, usually a week or a month. It's tough but you don't want an unmotivated player who is only there because you forced him to honour the contract.
It's the way it is but there are always other diamonds in the rough to be found.

Well, I wasn't expecting that. Best of luck to him although a shame for Riders and the BBL.

It's tough but you don't want an unmotivated player who is only there because you forced him to honour the contract. It's the way it is but there are always other diamonds in the rough to be found. Nix lost Ben Mockford a couple of weeks before their Trophy win with an "unbelievable" offer from a French team, not that we needed him up in Glasgow. His departure though coupled with a injury or two did cause to falter in the rest of the season. Phoenix have always had to struggle with players moving for bigger money fortunately usually at the end of a successful season. Not having the finances that some clubs have, its the usual, if you have really good season then there will be a good chance that someone else will offer him more money. Or they had a poor season with us do the club want him back. I'm aware that a couple of last season team have other contracts but I haven't seen where our backcourt of Teddy O and Austin Jr. have gone.

Dont let the fact he can literally take the piss out of most if not all BBL guards in other ways detract from the fact he has a perfectly functioning outside game too. The guy should be absolutely fine barring something strange happening.
