Lions sign Irish guard Sean Flood from BNXT League Ireland captain. One of the only Irish players playing overseas. Irish citizen therefore doesn't need a visa and probably shouldn't be counted as an import. Hopefully this gets some interest from basketball fans in Ireland. Genuine question, why shouldn't he be counted as an import when he is one? I thibk if you represent a country other than gb at senior level you should automatically be classed as an import but I can see why other think that is extreme

I thibk if you represent a country other than gb at senior level you should automatically be classed as an import but I can see why other think that is extreme That's just my personal opinion. You could have the opposite opinion. SLB could make the rule one way or the other. The Great Britain basketball team is just that; the team of Great Britain not the team to the UK. Northern Irish players are eligible to play for Ireland. They are also British citizens. People from Ireland have the right to live in Britain, vote and have all the rights that Britons have whether they are Irish or British. I think it's easier for SLB to treat them as Brits than to treat them as foreigners. They are Brits in the sense they don't need a visa, and many of them actually are Brits. I also think there's some benefit to having Irish players playing in SLB, if they're any good. If they're too good for the Irish Superleague but not good enough for the NBA the best place for them is SLB. That can only help SLB grow. Look at football, almost all the Republic of Ireland players play for clubs in Britain. SLB could be like that one day, or alternatively there could be an Irish team in SLB. I think this could be the first step towards that. Without access to SLB Irish players will have to go to Europe to play professional basketball or stay in Ireland and play at a lower standard. This might put some people off pursuing a career in basketball or cause them to retire younger. Finally I think it would be really good if the Ireland team was better and GB Vs Ireland could be a genuine rivalry. It would be good for basketball on both islands.

Just for clarification. Great Britain is England Scotland and Wales. Hence GB & NI in the Olympics etc. The British Isles includes Eire.

So that makes 4 returnees for Eagles, with only DD a starting 5 regular. How does that compare with everyone else ? We used to have the highest numbers of starting 5 returnees in our “glory days”, but sadly no more.

We used to have the highest numbers of starting 5 returnees in our “glory days”, but sadly no more. 6 of the 11 Gladiators are returnees - and if not been injury issues would probably say 3 of the 6 would have been expected to be starters all last season. One of the other 3 ended up starting more as season progressed.

Netball Superleague have announced their squads for the upcoming season. They made a day of it with coverage throughout the day on Sky Sports News. They have squads of 10 players which can include a maximum of 2 imports. Welsh, Scots, and Northern Irish are not counted as imports. I believe Irish wouldn't count as imports either but there aren't any. The imports are mostly from South Africa and Australia. Obviously completely different to basketball because there is no Great Britain netball team and no European players or American players, but I do think it affects my way of thinking about imports vs domestic players.

Big signing for Lions. Aside from JT who was already under contract they've signed all Brits, be interesting to see which bigs they can bring in if they can't sign imports yet due to visa constraints particularly if a decent chunk of budget is already gone on JTs salary.

Rai to Lions. Hmmmmmm! Wonder if we'll see him on Sunday....Nix home against Lions pre season "friendly". I am surprised Rai would have gone to firstly not a European team and secondly a team not playing in Europe. He was pretty good at Nix last year playing in a system where they draw the defence out from the rim, giving him space. However he did start to struggle when he met bigger bodies in the paint. He wasn't massivly effected against the like of (old) Lions when you had players like Grantham and Sharmer. The other thing is, he was the best sixth man in the Canadian league over the summer so wasn't considered a starter. It will be interested to see how he does at Lions. Larry Austen Jr was considered a top player when he was at the Nix, he went to Eagles and almost disappeared into obscurity.

The list at the top of this thread needs to add Raph Thomas-Edwards and Leslee Smith to the Bristol Flyers roster: both have done five seasons with the Flyers, and are co-captains for 2024-25. Smith was a superb defensive forward at the back end of last season, Raph was streaky in season but by all accounts has had a very effective summer in Australia.
