Nice one Hoopsfix getting that inside info about it being at the Copper Box. I'm personally very happy about that. In my opinion Copper Box Arena should become the national arena for the Great Britain men's team. It is a venue suitable for a national team. I think it depends on the game. The past few games in Newcastle have been good expect when we played Turkiyee and Lativia where we had to many away fans and not enough home fans. If they stay in Newcastle I ain't complaining but I do think it's nice to share the national team around the country especially when so many sports play the national team home games in London or the South of the country. Although I imagine whilst Marc is still at the Eagles I can't see the National team being moved any time soon. True. Maybe i should say GB should play some games in London and around the country. Games like this will help the team to get more well known.

If they put it on before the US play similar to how they have the WBBL final before the BBL mens final. Then maybe they will get more fans in for both games and if they enjoy the US match the fans might be more encouraged to support and back our own National Team. Whereas now it's almost like people are having to choose whether they go Cooperbox or O2 especially in the current cost of living crisis will many fans be able to afford to go to both games especially in London?

They should put the GB game on at the O2 and price it with normal ticket prices, like £35 a ticket, so regular basketball fans can go and watch it. On a wider point I would love it if London could get these kinds of games more regularly, but I appreciate it is not easy to fit in international basketball games that are not FIBA qualifiers. This is probably a one off opportunity and Great Britain Basketball have done well to get in on it.

In a sense of being able to stop fans from getting in to watch the GB game and then hiding in the arena so they can avoid having to pay the extortionate ticket prices for watching the latest USA redeem team play afterwards. I think they should just include it for free with the current game and take it as good exposure for British Basketball. I also think we'd be doing both the national teams of Sudan and Germany a favour to as we would be a non Olympic opposition giving them a warm up match. Which is good as they can play us without giving away any tactics or showing their hand they might use in the actual games.

I dont get this clamour by some for GB to be a 2nd fiddle/warmup act in a double bill feature with USA. Where is the evidence that this would be beneficial to basketball in the UK and the GB sides?
I'll throw a past example that didnt lead to any great obvious benefits - 2012 Manchester Arena GB were not a 2nd fiddle game but were the Team USA opponent. As much noise as we tried to make, we were drowned out by the USA chants from all sides of the arena. Did this fixture lead to an upsurge in interest in basketball in Manchester - facts say no as the team that existed at that time went on to play in sub standard venues in front of a tiny crowds, the ownership went on to collapse as did the one after that. Lets not distract and mention the current. Being part of the Team USA warmup game did not have any clear benefit to the sport in Manchester so why should it this time round in London?
Instead lets do what is happening - let the focus of a game involving GB be about being GB. Majority of folk at a Team USA game who are not already interested in GB or BritishBasketball are not suddenly going to change their mind based on scheduling GV v X on same billing and ticket as Team USA v Y.

There will be no hiding in the Arena. The games are on different days.
18 July GB Vs South Sudan 20 July USA Vs South Sudan 21 July GB women Vs Germany women 22 July USA Vs Germany 23 July USA women Germany women.
I agree GB women Vs Germany women is best played at the Copper Box, but the other games could all be staged at the O2, including GB vs South Sudan.
Also Josh Bett needs to be the commentator for that game so he can call everyone the King of South Sudan, and call us, the viewers Basel fans.

I heard the o2 is closed at the moment due to structural issues? Nope. Remember the BBL Play-Off Finals are there in a few weeks!

Is there any chance GB Vs South Sudan at the Copper Box could become an annual post season fixture? Or is there just no way?

Why are they called Redeem Team? They're current Olympic champions.

Why are they called Redeem Team? They're current Olympic champions. Because USA didn't win the FIBA Basketball World Cup last year.

Then they need to win the World Championships!
The Olympics is easier to win! Less competition.
Is "team" the right word. Bunch of individuals?

Given USA's patriotic culture of having the national anthem sang is class and played at just regular season sports games it actually suprises me USA NBA athletes wouldn't care about competing at the Fiba World Cup just as much as the Olympics. I can understand players wanting to take turns in order to allow others players opportunity to represent since they have such a high talent pool to choose from. But you would have thought if you were called up to represent your country especially with such a high list of players to choose from. Surely you would feel privileged. And I hope considering the dissapointed from some talented players who unfortunately missed out on the call. I hope all the guys picked don't take this opportunity for granted.

I don't think they will take it for granted. USA teams have been humbled in recent years, at the FIBA Basketball World Cup and and the FIFA Women's world cup. And these players know there are Europeans who are just as good as they are and there are Americans who missed out who are just as good as they are. They are expected to win so the pressure is on them. They are not going to want to be remembered as failures.

I love how they refer to the baseball champions as 'world champions' when hardly any other countries even have professional baseball Personally I also think the Olympics is bigger than the Worlds, but both are important. I think some NBA players just feel they need to get a rest too - when you play all season, 82 games plus playoffs, then have to play through the summer, it takes its toll on their bodies. If they have any nagging injuries they will likely turn down the national team in order to get healthy again or not risk aggravating something, so its understandable. It's much worse for other countries when their star NBA player decides not to play though (Luol Deng, anyone?)
