Fantastic news. Matt Newbie is a top basketball guy and it's a shame he's been out of the BBL since Worcester Wolves dropped out. Although with a young family maybe it was the best thing for him. Hopefully this is a step towards him coaching a BBL team again.

Great signing for Newcastle Eagles Women, but I'd love to see him back in the BBL. I can't help but feel a job in the WBBL is a bit below him, but I suppose you've got to take what's on offer.

I agree, it is. I am an advocate of women's basketball but the WBBL is not a high standard. And Newcastle Eagles women are not even one of the better teams. There's only so much you can do with players who are not gifted with natural talent.

I agree although one does wonder if he's joined the ladies he'll be secretly keeping an eye on the Men's team in order to replace Stetuel if things don't work out for him this season. Either way after this news I might be tempted to pop down to a Ladies match one Saturday evening some time soon and see what Coach Newby can do for this team.

I think Newcastle Eagles ladies are one of the best supported women's teams in the WBBL, and this news is only going to attract more fans. I also hope Matt will start to get involved with the men's team.

Lol lol lol
It's a matter of when not if
Let's all be completely honest about this
Obvious next coach of Eagles men
At which stage it will be a great move by them and they will be more competitive
He's the only guy I could see come remotely close to replacing Rob at Riders one day
And even then he couldn't replace Rob of course
Ps Eagles management finally listened to me
First I gave them a brick
Now I've given them the answer

In the meantime I wish Steutel the best of luck
Still appears in his hands to keep his job with consistent good performances and results from now on
He would be gone already if not
Eagles are nothing but loyal to be fair. Often too loyal if anything
Steutel seems a decent enough guy and don't wish anything bad for him
Like I say still in his hands but sport is a results business after all

He's great with junior basketball as well (Newby) so whilst he's helping the ladies I'm sure he might have some impact there
Last time I looked I think he was doing something for Basketball England or something like that?
Wonder if he can do both? Or he's stopped that

Interesting move as from what I understand this isn't a paid position (and none of the Eagles WBBL players are paid, their either playing for fun, working for the foundation or on a scholarship). He did a similar role for Durham Palatinates last season. I assume he does this for fun along with his job at Basketball England. Does he live locally and will be taking training daily? He's certainly a far more credentialed/proven BBL coach than Steutel that for sure.

Wow, I didn't see that one coming. Agree that Steutel's recent successes have saved him for now but what a coach to have in the wings.

'saved him for now'. Lol. Eagles win tomorrow and Sheff beat Leicester (both which are entirely possible) and they will have the same record as the 7 time coach of the year, with the European travel thrown in to boot.

Whilst that might be and although I hate that I'm sticking up for Riders here. Coach Rob has a team made up mostly of young and inexperienced rookies who you can see are still developing. Admittedly they should be aiming to do better there where they are but it is early on the season and even if they finish 5th or lower you can sort of understand and give Rob the benefit of a doubt this year unless the fail to make the playoffs. Plus I have a feeling they could be looking at building this team for future seasons. While the Eagles on the other hand given what we signed and the talent we got we should be doing alot better and knowing how good the players we have played for other teams. Then if this team doesn't make atleast top 4 then their will be questions on whether Stetuel is up to the job or has our backing. Obviously the main difference between Marc and Rob right now is experience. Rob is arguably one of best coaches in this league and has the over a decade of experience coaching Leicester and in the BBL compared to Stetuel who is only in year 2. While I like Marc and want him to do well at the moment I think he is only just finding out what works for this team and knows he is under pressure to perform this year as unlike last year he has given no excuses. Somebody on here did say that this team was wasted on Stetuel. I reckon if Rob and Marc were to swap teams, and you gave Rob the talent that we have. Then I reckon Rob would be able to utilise our squad and actually have us defeat London. It's a bold statement I know but I think giving the talent to someone like Rob who has a better idea what to do with it. I reckon he would have a field day with our team.

Rob is the best BBL coach of all time IMO
Based on loyalty to the BBL AND the ability to get the very best out of his players season upon season
The number of successful teams he's created from scratch is incredible
He's just relentless what he does
Weve had coaches who've gone onto bigger things of course NBA and been successful
We've Had coaches win more trophies - Fab
When Fab did it he had much more consistent squads of players
Rob has to re-invent teams and bring in new imports on and annual basis
He's got a system that works for BBL and he's just relentlessly delivers
This his latest work in progress
I say the above in all honesty
Nick Nurse the best coach to grace BBL
Fab the coach who's won the most trophies and best player coach of course
Rob the best BBL coach
All great in their own way
But when Robs gone the whole of BBL will miss him
He improved standards and raised the bar

Rob is the best coach right now but I think Fab was the one who raised the bar along with the Eagles organisation which inspired the current BBL teams to building better structure etc... He has 3 clean sweeps to show how he has reinvented squads and still had success over the years. Rob is the best coach right now in the BBL and you are right that he will be missed if he leaves. But I certainly wouldn't have his down as the G.O.A.T.

irf demonstrating yet again his utter ignorance of eagles history. (and the player turnover between 05-06 clean sweep to 09-10 triple to 11-12 clean sweep to 14-15 clean sweep)
does anyone take him seriously? Really?

I take myself seriously
He had himself Defoe and Smith for long periods of time to build around
Those 3 alone gave Eagles a huge chance and base before the season even started at a time when most clubs were running with much smaller and shallower squads
He had British passport players that were import quality for many years
Huge advantage that gave the club
He's in my top two ahead of Nick Nurse who wasn't around long enough
But I've got Rob above them both for out and out coaching in the BBL
And I've said why
Fab was as important as a player to Eagles in the success they had just as much as he was as a coach
