Hi random topic but from seeing the new arenas for the Gladiators and Sharks in recent weeks.
I realised that most arenas except Eagles and Lions tend to have wide side court seating that is long and wide instead of having seats surrounding the entire court from all 4 sides.
To be honest I think long side seating is better as being behind the basket means you don't get such a great view of the on court action.
It sort of my me wonder why the Eagles went for an arena in this style instead of having long and wide seating on the sides?

I'm pretty sure the Eagles courts were designed around having two fullsize courts lengthways. The widthways arrangement is only ever used for BBL games. This is for example so that the various senior teams can still train when a youth game is on etc.

The only thing I can think of is maybe all around seating could be better if your arena is also going to be used for events like boxing and wrestling, which you might want consider if you're building a basketball specific venue and want to have some extra income streams.
Whereas seating just along the sides might be better if you're going to use your arena for other sports with different size courts, which happens at NBPC Manchester and the new Sheffield Sharks arena.

First of all, having walls at either end of your court looks crap. Especially when your baskets are fixed to the wall or roof.
Having seating behind the baskets also gives you a chance to price your seats as premium and value, therefore making it a bit more affordable for a family for example. Also Eagles have a capacity of 3,000, almost double what Caledonia have at the moment and around a thousand more than Sharks. I'd guess when Gladiators build their 'super arena' they'll have seating all the way around to accommodate the numbers they want to have.

I believe that the Gladiators 6,000 seat arena will have all round seating. Personally, I don't like sitting behind the hoop.

Sitting behind the goal has some advantages though, like when the opposing players are shooting free throws and you get to try and distract them. Plus you get a great view of the action at that end - someone flying in for a dunk, for example, or guys going at it under the hoop jostling for position. Obviously you lose out when the action is at the other end of the floor, but you can still see what's going on, especially if you are level with the court. That said I also prefer the side, ideally a few rows back.
