I'm sure this is good news but I'm not sure why people in the US unless they have family or friends involved in the league would he interested in the British Basketball league being broadcasted over there.
From a business perspective I can see a business wanting to establish advertising in the UK maybe be interested as using it as a foot hold to get some advertisment though.

This is big news. New England has a population of 15 million people, which is a quarter of the population of Great Britain. They're 5 hours behind us. And, as you all know, Boston Celtics, and their G League team Maine Celtics, are their only professional basketball teams. This is a very good market for the BBL.

There are some people who refuse to watch anything but the absolute highest level of sport. But there are other people, like us, who enjoy watching competitive sports at a slightly lower level. I don't know why. Maybe it's because it's more relatable, and every owner, fan, player, official and commentator is there for the love of the sport, not for money.

This is great news for the BBL and quite unexpected. Does this mean the YouTube channel will get geo blocked?

I just can't see Americans being interested in the bbl. They barely know the rest of the world exists as it is, and would see it as massively inferior to the nba. But who knows, its a big country, only needs a few thousand people to make it worthwhile I guess.

Presumably some people watch it.

But who knows, its a big country, only needs a few thousand people to make it worthwhile I guess. If I can be blunt... the BBL being broadcast on NESN in the US is nothing but schedule filler. NESN (the New England Sports Network) is a niche local cable channel, it's certainly not ESPN. And by the looks of it the BBL has already been relegated from it's actual cable TV channel to it's subscription streaming app. I suspect NESN are paying very little, if anything, for the coverage. However, this is still a really good opportunity that the BBL has seized upon. Any international coverage is a good thing because you never know what might come of it. And I believe this is the first time british basketball has got any international coverage since the British Basketball All-Stars Championship in various territories across the world on DAZN. In summary, for now, I'd say this is a case of something is better than nothing and another statement of intent from the BBL.

The BBL may have jumped the gun in announcing this via their weekly email - because the link provided to read more doesn’t do anything and there’s no other mention of this anywhere else online yet, but here’s the text from the email:
British Basketball League secures U.S. media rights partnership with NBC Sports Regional Networks
The British Basketball League is proud to announce a ground-breaking media rights agreement for coverage of the League’s 2023/24 season with NBC Sports Regional Networks.

But based on my limited knowledge I’d say this regional NBC Sports deal is bigger than the NESN one. It’s still not like the BBL is going to be on ESPN or anything, but it will get some eyeballs in the US and that’s probably nothing but a good thing. Another good move by the BBL, this certainty feels like a new era of british basketball.

To be honest a bit of both really I mean stranger things have happened in the world of sport like the actors Rob Mchelney and Ryan Reynolds buying a Welsh Football Club. You are right though whilst not everyone may understand why the BBL is broadcasting stateside I don't see this being any way detrimental to the league. I could imagine one day MJ catching a game on TV and saying you know what I'm bored with being owner of the Charlotte Hornets and deciding to sell up and buy the Manchester Giants instead. I would also love to see a googlebox version where a group of NBA players watch a BBL game and give their opinion of it. If they're wanting to try and make the BBL the 2nd best league to the NBA then it would be good to see them get feedback from the NBA for what they might be missing.

But it’s certainly not outside the realms of possibility that someone with a lot of money and an interest in basketball might get visibility of the BBL because of these US broadcast deals that otherwise wouldn’t have and decide to invest one way or another. And I suspect that’s the real reason behind these recent announcements. It would be really great if that comes to fruition, but in the meantime, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I’m sure the Yanks will just love to see British basketball on their local networks. This is just more hype. No one in America will want to watch subpar basketball from the U.K. during the height of NBA and NCAA seasons. The product is just not good enough no matter how much we want to believe it is.
Grasping at straws I’m afraid.

Grasping at straws I’m afraid. A random American is probably more likely to watch some random basketball than a Brit is. Maybe they aren't paying for NBA or NCAA. I sometimes watch Welsh Premiership rugby and I'm not even Welsh. It's probably about the equivalent standard as BBL. In fact more people watch Welsh Premiership rugby than watch the BBL. You do get some people who only want to watch the very highest level of a sport. But other people like to watch sports where the players, fans and officials are all there because they love it, and the standard is quite good but not exactly elite.

But this product, along with the mess that’s going on with 777, is not what I’d want to show in America. What exactly is the point? Is BBL that good where American audiences are going to love it like some of us do? BBL should focus on getting a U.K. audience, terrestrial and getting those arenas packed before we show the world such a subpar product.

Which is the Australian football league for those who don't know. They might see it one day and be curious but I can't imagine them thinking it as highly as the NBA.
