Dunno mate, the man is bringing basketball back to his country, if you look at the history, he spent less time in england than he did sudan, egypt or america

South Sudan are winning games in the world cup. GB do well to qualify for EuroBasket where they lose all their games. South Sudan is a very new country. Basketball could be South Sudan's national sport (I don't know if that's true to be honest). Sports in Britain are already very well established and basketball has probably missed the boat. I think he made the right choice. He's probably making more of a positive impact for South Sudan than he ever could do for Britain. I'm proud of him though. Best British player ever, and now he's giving back. British basketball/BBL should try to get him involved though. Maybe get some upcoming talent into the BBL.

The only reason he didn't play much for GB was down to money, more specifically the insurance side

He wanted in with GB - they said no. He then went to South Sudan and look at the difference he's made. I have no doubt whatsoever he'd have made a tangible difference with GB, yet the jobs for the boys mentality once again ruled supreme.

I didn't know that, however I am convinced he is doing more good with South Sudan than he probably could have done with GB. If GB was at the FIBA Basketball World Cup would our media care? I have done a little bit of reading on South Sudan. Since they were founded 12 years ago they have entered a couple of athletes (athletics) in the last 2 Summer Olympics. They have men's and women's national teams in football and in basketball. And their only team with success is their men's basketball team. What their basketball team has achieved in a short amount of time is amazing and could be important in the unity and morale of that country.

To be fair it's not the first time Deng has beaten China. I remember at the London 2012 Olympics he was part of that 1 and only win we got at the Olympics against China as well. His last match in a GB vest if I'm not mistaken.
To be honest if GB Basketball said no and Sudan were progressing I suppose I cannot blame him for back to his Birth Country and trying to build the sport over there. I thought Deng did still do some smaller work the Basketball community around London though for GB Basketball unless I am mistaken.
On another note whilst at work I have followed some of the Fiba World Cup scores. And asides from funding I remember there was a debating saying it was harder for GB to qualify for the World Cup and Olympics because they are Europe where the competition level is alot tougher compared to other continents.

Without doubt this is true. The teams that have qualified for the next round are from Europe and the Americas, plus Australia. The teams from Asia and Africa haven't progressed to the next round, (although they do now play a losers' tournament, which France also have to play in, similar to the FIBA Europe Cup for teams that lose their Champions League qualifier).

That would be awesome and very marketable. The Luol Deng Cup.
