I retired gracefully from playing at age 34 - partly due to a bad back, partly due to general fitness not being what it could be and partly because that lack of fitness meant keeping up with guys 10-15 years younger was getting increasingly difficult! I've looked to see if there is a local club for the over 40s in the area but sadly there isn't - the focus of the local sports centre seems to be on youth basketball. If there was I'd probably still play, as you'd feel able to play at a more comfortable pace and it would probably be more 'fun' and less 'competitive' which would also be good.

Here in the north east/Teesside lots of new teams and a new north east league starting in September which looks promising, all the local teams seem to have busy sessions in all age groups.

Interestingly BE's "Northeast" section only lists 2 leagues. BE NortheastDurham Basketball Association and Northumberland Tyne & Wear Basketball Association. No North East League. Don't leagues have to register and affiliate with BE to be properly sanctioned/insured etc? Otherwise just anybody could start a league up.............

I have worded it wrong, it’s more of a rebrand of a existing league and expanded with more teams www.facebook.com/northeastleague

Is walking basketball a real thing? Walking basketball with no jumping sounds like a good idea for old players.

I've never seen or heard of it, but if you can have walking football I don't see why not! Personally I'd still rather run, but it would be more of a light jog these days Walking football tends to be for the over 60s, maybe over 50s - so I'm not there just yet!

Nix started a walking basketball group 6/7 years ago, great fun and so much tougher than you'd imagine run by the community coach. We'd have between 4 or 5 up to a dozen. Issues were fitting in court time and having an afternoon slot which cut down numbers (both men/women). Eventually it wasn't possible to continue and was switched to an evening but changed to "back to basketball". By then I'd been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis so had to duck out of it. (Now play walking netball, everyone's smaller so is the ball)!!

How does walking basketball actually work though? I mean if you're just walking the ball up and not allowed to run, isn't it rather easy for the defender to steal the ball? With no rapid movement I'd have thought defending in general would be very easy, or are there restrictions on that too?

I have no idea but I would think the game would be a bit more like netball because you can move the ball a lot quicker by passing it.

Lots of information if you just Google it including a BBC breakfast report with Mike Bushell trying it out in Surrey back in 2014 even with a comment by Creon. As for easy, next time you are on a court stand under one basket then walk as fast as you can to the other basket then return back.

I mean surely walking to the other basket and back is still easier than running? But I didn't say its easy, just that defending must be quite easy because your man can't run past you. I would think ball movement is key as Dexter said - keep the ball moving to avoid turnovers. I'm sure it's not as bad as this but have you seen the Father Ted episode where they do the over 75's indoor football match? The speed those lads are going at...
