What do folk think about the new world cup style event that will form part of the new NBA season in the early stages? www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/37981050/nba-officially-unveils-format-groups-new-season-tournamentThey've been talking about it for years, personally I'm excited and think it will ve a good thing. It will help break up the monotony of the long regular season. But I don't think American fans will really get it, not to begin with. Their whole thing is who wins the championship each year - literally nothing else seems to mean anything. Finishing with the best record after 82 long games barely gets noticed. However I do think in time they'll learn to appreciate it and be happy to see their team win it.

The only thing which I think might hold it back is the way it’s scheduled. I’ve had to read through quite a few times and I’m still not sure I fully understand it, what with some league games counting as cup games too etc.
It might be that it doesn’t matter, but I just feel like simplicity is key for all competitions.

Sounds exciting and something the NBA had been taking about for a number of years. I'd like to think Americans would be able to understand a cup format especially if they watch other sports and events like the Fifa World Cup or Tennis. Whether they will take this is another thing. I suppose its similar to whether the BBL will take to having an All Star Game except this will be a serious contest and not just a gimic. How teams treat the extra games we will have to see.

got the same flaw as the championship - if the two best teams in the cup are in the same conference then we wont see them face each other in the final.
imagine if the world cup was done to ensure always a Euro country v Americas country in the final even if best 2 teams have been from same region. flawed. they had a chance to do things different in the cup from the championship and bottled it. fine to regionalise in the groups if got travel concerns but semi-finals in a cup should be open draw to differentiate from championship especially as going to a central venue.

Yes thats a shame they have done that, maybe it'll change in the future though. Early in the season it might not be clear who the best 2 teams are anyway. I expect to see 1 or 2 'lesser' teams do well in this as it is only 4 group games and 3 knockout games. Hit a purple patch at the right time or get lucky with opponents having injury issues and almost anyone could come through. One of the reasons I like it, as when the season starts, around 20 teams already know they're not championship contenders but this gives everyone a chance to win something.
