They've certainly done the right thing with streaming free on YouTube. Given that if they were looking for a quick buck I'm sure many established fans would be happy to pay. The increase in production quality has been very very much welcome too. I couldn't really care less about the social media stats. Although how the clubs themselves (without bottomless pits of laundered Miami drug money to flush down the toilet) turn this into increased revenue is yet to be seen. It certainly hasn't seemed to translate into large corporate sponsorships, additional advertising interest or TV money yet given (Glads and London aside) teams are struggling or ok but still just trying to sell enough beer and hot dogs to keep the lights on another week.

The only thing I'm wondering is when and if the Sky Sports is coming back. I haven't seen any official announcement yet but after reading this surely there going to be looking to air for another season. What would be even better as well for the Women's game would be if they could run a similar weekly TV game for the WBBL as well.

For TV coverage to be beneficial there is a minimum set of standards needed that the WBBL is still a long way off meeting. If a game is being played in front of essentially nobody casual viewers will simply assume that it is an extremely poor product that isn’t worth watching and once they are established such views are likely to persist however much the league does to improve the game day experience.

There needs to be at least four teams at London Lions standard so high quality competitive games between different teams can be shown. I think a short competition with combined teams is something that could be done for the TV audience. A North East team (Newcastle plus Durham) An East Midlands team (Leicester plus Nottingham) etc. Bring in some star players if possible.

I agree with your first point but not your second. I have just watched the EuroBasket Women Great Britain games. The standard was high. There weren’t many people in the arena but that didn’t detract from the game. More importantly it was in a good quality arena. The production was good (although the commentators were not good). But most importantly the players were all good. It was a higher standard than we see in the WBBL. Some of the top WBBL players hardly got any minutes and couldn’t make any impact or score any points.

I understand what you mean, although I have seen some European games where the stands have been empty. As well as other smaller sports as well where theirs been barely a crowd atmosphere but still get TV viewing. In a way from what you described it feels like a catch 22 really as I know the WBBL wants to attract more fans and get people to see the games and therefore would need a Tv deal in order to spread the word. But at the same time it seems like they won't get a TV deal without growing a bigger fan base. Although I think the tournament idea would be interesting. Again if your going to get me invested in the WBBL I feel as though they need more then just the 3 Finals games on TV as season. Back to the mens game I remember an episode of the BBL Show podcast where they spoke to the person behind Buzz 16. I think when asked about would they do any side shows similar NBA Heatcheck etc... I think they said they wanted to do more Live stuff first before branching into side shows. Again this article makes me wonder whether they will try to capitalise and add more stuff now they have gain a higher audience viewership!

Again this article makes me wonder whether they will try to capitalise and add more stuff now they have gain a higher audience viewership! What I would like to see for the women’s game is something that lasts about a month like the Hundred in cricket. Six teams. Professional and well promoted. Not like a FIBA tournament because having just watched EuroBasket that doesn’t work very well for a team with 5 excellent players but a weak bench. The games are too close together, the players get tired and the games are scrappy. The teams should only play twice a week at the weekend, like the BBL. Very few people are going to follow women’s basketball all season but people can get into a tournament for a few weeks. We’re only asking people to be interested in women’s basketball for a month. I think the autumn or January would be the best time for it. If it’s at the end of the season people will be watching the BBL or other sports. Usually when I see European women’s basketball there’s not much of a crowd but I’m sure people watch it on TV. In a lot of British indoor arenas the crowd is on one side so you can’t see if there are spectators or not unless the camera shows it. The important thing for TV is the court is set up and you don’t have all the other coloured lines on the floor. I believe if BBF, WBBL, BBL and Sky Sports want something like this to happen they can make it happen pretty easily. I would definitely watch it.

I'm not a fan of 777 but credit where it's due. The online experience is a world away from the BBL Player. I love it on YouTube, in particular the ability to pause, rewind, even join a game late and restart it. I also find that often, having watched an Eagles game live, when I watch it back, those "contentious" referee decisions were actually correct.
Every day's a school day. 😇

Oh, and the BBL site security certificate is out of date. I've let them know.
