Hi after yesterday's game I thought I would start a discussion about the officials and what people think. Firstly I understand that the refs given dictated the Eagles position this season and that we haven't been good enough and deserve to finish 9th this season.
And I understand being an official can be a challenge and they will at times miss things. Plus I have seen gamed where the officials have done well and called a game right. But at the same time I have seen a few calls this past season that have been highly questionable.
-Firstly Manchester at home when Giants had 6 players on court and it was pointed out by the Eagles coach. The Eagles somehow got a Tech for the officials error.
-The London Lions game at home where they were inconsistent and called everything against the Eagles including an offensive foul on a 3 point play from the corner somehow.
-Finally last night Caledonia Gladiators there player Sloan physically assaulted David Cohen yet to which even the commentary said he should have been ejected. Yet somehow despite the ball not being anywhere near and it happening right in front of the officials who saw it. They called it a pushing foul?
And that is just from the Eagles games I saw. I know with the last one a similar thing happened on sky between Giants and Riders at Christmas but the correct call was made ejecting the Giants player. But I'm not going to lie last night it wouldn't suprise me if after watching it back I would love to have sat those officials down and said "can you please explain this call?"
I have noticed over the course of this season their has been a higher calling of the unsportsmanlike foul in games. And I know that officials can't always be perfect and I respect them for the amount of criticism they are given. Again I wouldn't blame them for where the Eagles finished and do think the officials last night had a good game apart from that one dumb call.
But in cases like last night it makes a very good argument for VAR to be introduced if incidents like this are allowed to go unproperly challenged. And with some of these incidents it makes the league officials look like a joke watching it back.

The officials, who have many years experience to reach BBL level will call the game honestly and how they see the incidents. Remember that an official has a very differnet angle to somene sat in the stands. Yes there may be times when the make the wrong decision, but compared to the mistakes made by players and coaches in every game it is a miniscule percentage. Also it is a teams responsibility to ensure they have the correct number of players on court.

I understand that but I still don't understand how the officials can make a mistake and then give the opposing team a technical for pointing out there mistake. To me what that says their not owning their mistakes. Atleast when a coach or player makes an error usually they tend to own the mistake and admit they made a bad play or tactical decision. And last night understandabley when its a fast game or more hidden you can understand missing and making a wrong call. But for 3 officials to miss one so obvious and not even on the ball I do think is highly questionable. But then if that is the case I would argue for VAR to be introduced in order to help with that. Which earlier on in the season both Dan and Rowe on comms said the league was thinking about introducing.

I think Dave made a great point on SNB the other week. Until we professionalise the officials theyre going to be sub par. They need to be paid to be a ref not just claim a game fee.

I recall the 6 player incident being discussed on SNB by Dan & Dave - their analysis, I think, was that the ball had yet to be inbounded so no violation had taken place. Coach Steutel had however come well out of his coaching box, and got a technical for that - which is a legitimate call. I for one have rarely if ever seen a player or a coach 'own' a mistake after a game. I think they understand that mistakes are part of the game and move on. I think there is perhaps a wider question of accountability that's worth exploring, but that is pretty futile until we have a well resourced and supported officiating programme where refs can be supported to develop.

this week just highlighted the crazyness that IRS is not in place midweek in Cardiff at the U18 four nations tournament the referees had the benefit of IRS being available and the games I watched they did use it then friday night we have incidents screaming for IRS to be there for the officials benefit - and nope instead they need to huddle and chat without the benefit of technology

Having watched the fourth quarter on YouTube I have to say Sloan was lucky on the night as ref Szafraniec appeared to be looking straight at it. He will be doubly lucky if the league don't take retrospective action. Things got feisty in the fourth as Cali collapsed. Feisty is fine but assault is not.

Nah, NBA refs get paid very well indeed and still make embarrassing mistakes all the time. Plus how do you pay a bbl ref a full time salary when they only do 1-2 games a week?

You pay BBL players and coaches a full time salary when they only play 1-2 games per week! Yes but they are practicing most days, doing fitness training etc. Perhaps community events too. Referees are not in training courses every day although perhaps they should be!

I think for the officials all that needs to happen is for this to be reviewed which I like to think they do anyway as part of training and development. But that's probably it and again I felt asides from that call I thought they had a good game and made plenty of correct calls. If the Eagles had have lost the game last night I would still be mad about the call but also wouldn't have blamed them for the loss. And again it is understandable even in the NBA that officials can sometimes miss things or might not be in a position to issue higher penalty or actions. But that is where I would expect the League itself to look at the game and at the very least launch an official investigation. And hopefully take action against Sloan which I think should be a 1 game suspension for Glads 1st playoff match. To be honest I do wonder what happens or if their are any stories of officials being so heavily criticised after a game like the Lions match they do end up having action taken against them. Again it being just one call I wouldn't demote or take action against the refs from last night. But in games like the Lions at home match I would have made the argument for them to be pulled up for very poor and questionable officiating.
