Hi guys, Apologies if this is another stupid question from me. I've been trying to find clarification on a rule surrounding free throws but am coming up short, I was wondering is someone here might know the answer ... Essentially, how many points do you get for tipping in a missed free throw? At the 54:50 mark of the Scorchers vs Phoenix stream from yesterday's game, Padiet Wang has 2 free throws. He drains the first one, taking Scorchers' points total from 41 to 42. He then misses the second, the ball bouncing off the rim and then being tipped in by Scorchers' Ryan Martin. Surrey's score increases from 42 to 43. Once the ball hits the rim, is it not then a live ball? Why is Martin's field goal not counted as 2 points?

Yeah, thanks. I did a little more digging and the scoreboard both at the arena and on the stream were incorrect and about a minute later correctly adjusted. The BBL website's play-by-play has things all correct.
Been driving myself crazy over this overnight hah; dreaming of an improbable forced replay or something. These are the straws we have to clutch at in Guildford right now …

I can't think of a single situation where a basket is only worth 1 point, other than a free throw!

Surely there must be plenty of deliberately missed free throws in order to get that extra point from the rebound ?

Surely there must be plenty of deliberately missed free throws in order to get that extra point from the rebound ? Unless you absolutely need the 2 points to send the match to overtime in the dying seconds or you want to waste those dying seconds and not let the other team take a time out and advance the ball up court then I'm pretty sure you'll always want to try to score? How likely are you to score the rebound considering the defence are lining up closer to the basket than your offence?

Yes you do see that a lot, at the end of a close game it's the only way to get the 2 points you need so they have to miss on purpose and hope for an offensive rebound. I've even seen it where 3 points are needed and then they have to not only get the ball but get it back outside the 3 point line and get the shot up - its probably about a 2% chance of actually working but still better than making the free throw and there isn't enough time on the clock to get another possession so you lose.
