BWB Women’s Premier League

Last season the British Wheelchair Basketball Women’s Premier League was broadcasted by the BBC. There’s no indication yet that it will be this year. BWB Women’s Premier League is the only professional women’s wheelchair basketball league in the world. It is funded by the National Lottery. Wheelchair basketball receives a lot more funding than basketball because Great Britain is one of the best teams in the world and a medal contender.

The BWB Women’s Premier League 2023 season started last weekend, with wins for Loughborough Lightning and East London Phoenix. Both games were live streamed on the British Wheelchair Basketball YouTube channel. The production quality is really good. These two teams meet on Sunday at 3pm at SportsDock. Nice - I think wheelchair basketball is awesome, it's completely different to regular basketball and the skill sets are vastly different too. In fact I'd say the one similarity, the shooting, is more skillful from the wheelchair players as the hoop is still 10 feet high. Have you ever tried shooting while sitting on a chair?! You'd embarrass yourself, let's just say that.

I dont know about the women, but also the men can be quite aggressive - there's sometimes a fair bit of argy bargy that goes on and players getting tipped over, I think it's good. Basketball today is way too soft compared to the 80s and 90s when I got into it, so it's nice to see a bit more steeliness in the wheelchair game.

BWB Women's Premier League is back on the BBC. It's still also on the British Wheelchair Basketball YouTube channel, but with professional production and commentary. Each team has a home game being broadcasted by the BBC with Cardiff Met Archers' game today. This also means the court, camera and sound is set up for the WBBL game which is on right now. This is good because usually Cardiff Met Archers games are practically unwatchable.
