They could play in Bracknell but have said before they won’t leave Reading.

Reading do many things the right way, trophy games aside I hope they're granted permission

Sounds promising. Reading Rockets, along with the likes of Solent and Worthing, feel like natural NBL teams to transition to the BBL (if they want to). I'd much rather existing organisations teams like this are given the opportunity to slowly establish themselves in the BBL, rather than new upstarts promising the world.

I remember when Worthing moved up before and it didn't go very well. I think they did 3 years and never made the playoffs, 2 of the years they were at the bottom or 2nd bottom I think and just struggled financially. The highlight for me was the trophy game against Brighton Bears, as I supported both at the time. Andrew Alleyne broke one of the hoops right at the final buzzer with a dunk which felt rather symbolic, given the Bears used to play in that venue.
Anyway so I'm not sure that'll happen again for Worthing, but then I don't suppose Reading have much more financial footing either. Solent seem like the most obvious choice.
Lord knows the BBL could do with a few more teams though, as long as they're competitive and meet the standards with venue, etc.

Believe they have been trying to get into the BBL for sometime, this is fantastic for the league providing a venue can be sourced. Any one bothered by the potential of the Rockets vs the Rockets

More pie in the sky unless a decent venue is found.
Poor crowds will just lead to an agonizing death, in the same vein as Leeds.
Reading has no basketball tradition in terms of fan interest.
Chuck money at it if you like but unless the foundations are solid the castle will eventually crumble.

How many do they typically get in these days Solly? I always thought they had a reasonable fan base and going BBL could help.

Assuming Reading Rockets finish the season (which im sure they will, obviously) they will tie Plymouths Raiders record of 21 consecutive seasons in the second division. Its a shame if they dont break the record but im sure they wont that bothered lol.
Solly, i think thats a little harsh on Reading Rockets regards fan base. I cant speak at all about how many they get nowadays but they used to get a few hundred at the rivermead back in the day the late 90's early 2000s, and most were certainly into it and made noise etc, not bad for a side that had never played top flight nor had the carrot of being able to promote to the top. Back when i played on there cadets in 2003/04 i was at a few of there games and they were good nights. Keep in mind my experience of NBL1 basketball at that point was watching the Oxford Devils with my mum and brother and about five other people sat on chairs next to the court and zero atmosphere. I can remember when Plymouth Raiders showed up, and had there travelling army of hardcore fans constantly singing, we didnt know what to say lol.
They certainly have had fans before and i would rather have a team such as this than some completely new upstart.
Tell you one thing i found strange about Reading. When i was doing all that research recently trying to find all those scores and tables, i did end up trawling through the Reading Evening Post's archives at one point and they had a heck of a lot of coverage of the Thames Valley Tigers in it. Was not expecting to find that i know its the same county and all but hey. Even by the time i reached the years where the Rockets had formed there was still more Tigers coverage.

If this did happen would the potential new Birmingham franchise have to change their name as well?
I have never been to Reading but as proven a team doesn't need to be in a huge city in order to be sustainable in this league..
And it would be great if this happens and the BBL was to have 12 clubs again. In an ideal world you would want 14-16 teams but I'd take new comers for the extra games.
If 777 are serious in investing in the league perhaps they could help them out?

Without sounding like Boris, surely 777 / BBL could support any new franchises with a form of "leveling Up" in their first few years - not to necessarily squander on salaries but to get bums on seats etc.

Didn't there used to be a communal pool of income (not sure from where, TV deals or sponsorship perhaps) that was distributed on a weighted system to help the clubs most in need financially?

Even if it is agreed the franchise fee can be paid over X years (as I believe has been done in the past).

In related news… it’s been confirmed Gloucestershire Kings will also be submitting an application for a BBL franchise commencing with 2022/23 season.

I am not sure how I feel about the prospects of Gloucester having a long-lasting successful team but I suppose there’s not much to lose in them trying

Not sure how a complete start up will fair, royals where a disaster. And not sure geographically if glouster has much basketball history or interest, but will be interesting to see…. Everyone wants a piece of this £7 million it would seem

They dropped out of nbl3 because it cost too much, they shouldn't be in the bbl
