I’m sitting with flu watching sports channels. I put Viaplay Xtra on. They had a couple of short videos about Euroleague players which definitely gave me the impression Euroleague is going to be one of their leagues. There’s a difference between putting a game on without context (which Freesports used to do) and showing content that is intended to get you invested in the personalities. This evening on Viaplay Xtra FC Barcelona play Panathinaikos in Euroleague. Viaplay seems to be an improvement on Premier Sports. It seems very well produced and they are very keen on branding their products.

Viaplay bought Premier Sports at the end of August this year, and have been showing many live Euroleague games each wee
This week they showed Bayern munich vs Real Madrid on Tuesday, Anadolu Efes vs Baskonia on Wednesday and Zalgiris vs Real Madrid yesterday.
Its a virtual glut of top class basketball, which comes for free with Virgin Media.

Agreed seems like a quality production for basketball. Not watching any NBA at all it's really different sort of game to the BBL.

I do hope you watched the Barcelona vs LDLC Asvel game, featuring Parker Jackson-Cartwright, who played at Cheshire, and Jonah Mathews, who was signed by Leicester but never played for them. It was a extremely close game, which Asvel won by a single point.

I know several of the Nix fans were planning to go over there to catch one of their games in the new year.

NBA, BBL and Euroleague are three very different sorts of basketball. All good in their own way. I’m fairly new to following basketball closely so I know there are subtly different rules between the different leagues, but would you (or anyone else) be able to, in fairly layman’s terms, please explain what the differences in play/style are between the three?

Good question. I am not the most knowledgeable person to answer this question. Hopefully someone else on here can answer. I would say the BBL (London Lions aside) is about the lowest level of professional basketball. Compared to Euroleague and NBA the players are smaller and don’t score such high percentages. In NBA and Euroleague the players are excellent and huge. There is a lot of 3 point shooting. In Euroleague there is more of a physical battle in the paint and big centres like Eddy Tavares and Jan Vesely play a big role. With the intimidating crowds, aggressive coaches and very physical players Euroleague games feel like more of a battle than the NBA.

A big difference is that it’s generally considered that European basketball is played at a slower pace than NBA basketball. However most people consider the BBL to be closer to NBA basketball than European basketball in that respect. So it’s not just about talent, size of players, and some slightly different rules, it’s about how the game is played as well.

They have an American coach. The play in both the BBL and EuroCup. And having a big on the court all of the time is a big part of their game.

Someone should make a video on this. It’s a very interesting question. This is obviously something coach Schmidt understands. He is doing very well in adapting the team to play in EuroCup. I would also like to hear Aaron Radin’s view of this, more from a cultural standpoint. From what I have heard him say it’s clear that he appreciates that USA, UK and Europe have three very different sporting cultures including in basketball.
