Just looked at the YouTube ready for tonight's Nix game. A bit surprised (pleasantly) to see viewing figures of Flyers/ Giants at 2.5 K a d the Lions/ Riders at 9.8K. Hmmmmm, .Looks like there are people out there who know the BBL actually exists.

Great to hear. I wonder how many of those were because of the 'Lions factor' and the number of names they've signed
Also the improved camera streams and footage will definitely have contributing in maintaining a casual fans interes

Watching the Giants game now and the quality of the stream compared to last year is incredible, feels so much more professional

10k for Lions Riders is pretty incredible actually. Especially since it was on free to view TV.

Goodness, yes. Things are finally starting to happen. These viewing figures are similar to Netball Superleague numbers. The arenas are also packed (is this normal?). This could be a pivotal moment in our sport.

10k for Lions Riders is pretty incredible actually. Especially since it was on free to view TV. It wasn't on free to view TV, it was on Sky Sports Arena - a premium subscription channel. It was repeated on Sky Sports Mix the following day, but even that is a subscription channel. Regardless, it's great to see more people are watching the BBL. I also noticed this week's Sunday Night Breakdown (Dan and Dave's podcast) got record views on YouTube too. It'll be interesting to see the numbers for the rebooted The BBL Show this week too.

Unfortunately, 16 months on from this, viewership doesn't seem to have gone up any more. The last 2 games on Sky Sports YouTube channel have 8.8k and 5.5k views. Trophy final has 18k views. Nothing done so far has done anything to make the BBL more popular or mainstream. We, the fans, are spoilt for good quality streamed games, but how many of us are there? My guess is about as many as an average League Two football team, in total but spread across the whole country.

All-Stars livestream on Sky Sports YouTube channel has 9.7k views.
Compare that to the Trophy final 19k views;
or the most popular BBL game on that channel ever which was the BBL Cup final last year, Leicester vs London 35k views, a game i was at along with 16k other fans.
I don't think the changes to the BBL have worked. The BBL Cup final last year was fantastic. It is the most popular BBL game ever and it was one of the best.

The NBL trophy final has over 2000 views on YouTube as well, just since yesterday. Good presentation and court etc. When you think how bad the NBL was for anything like this in the past, it's also moved on a lot now which has to be good for the sport in general.

Interesting, looking at the Basketball England YouTube channel, NBL gets just as many views as BBL when it's produced at the same quality.

I watched the final on you tube it was a good game, fast. Competitive and the referees let it flow, a good advert for the NBL

Check again in a months time like the Trophy final has been up and then compare. Similar to the cup final from last year, check the all star game again in a year. Also, the NBL can only be watched on YouTube. Remember BBL will also have viewers on Sky Sports and via the US sports channels. I have seen the BBL coverage in the US talked about by Americans, although most of the time they seem surprised we even have a pro league. Hard to compare viewership figures via YouTube.

That isn’t a bad watching figure in correlation to a very busy weekend of free to air sport

That isn’t a bad watching figure in correlation to a very busy weekend of free to air sport I've been thinking about what would be good. I reckon 50k viewers for a big BBL game would be good. That would be one in a thousand people watching it. That would be more than the netball superleague gets for regular season games and about a quarter of what televised club rugby games get. Obviously we don't have access to all the data and the financials but from what we can see we're still a long way off what you would want for a professional league with broadcast commercial value.

It is hard sell this weekend - with three six nations games on and FA Cup Quarter-Finals. 777 have to think more clever here on occasions for me - aim for event games on weekends like forthcoming where you have an international football weekend. Thing is comparing like for like to degree on certain sports doesn't tell you a lot other than audience share and sports have made errors here before. BBL need to look at demographics of who's watching it. That's the real data to help. Someone like Formula 1 gave the sport a massive jolt with the Netflix doc series - brought in a younger audience who are not bothered about the leaders of the grid rather the stories in the middle. I know Caledonia have done stuff but I am surprised for such a content driven business 777 haven't looked to get something together about Lions (and in particular their European games) and tried to get it on a streaming service or create the hype a YouTube series can.

Agree with you on this. A docuseries on the BBL would be great. Most of the British public don't even know that the UK has a pro league. How easy is it to get something onto Netflix? I cant imagine its cheap and an easy task.

I cant imagine its cheap and an easy task. To that quality - it's expensive. The production behind Drive to Survive pretty cornered the market on Netflix as well - name a sport, they've done it on there now. But you could do something like Bunch of Amateurs have done on You-Tube which is pretty simple stuff hand held/go pro and it gets over 80k views over time. An episode about a football team not far off park level has nearly managed 500k. Dorking's average game on there seems to settled down at anywhere between 60k to 100k views.
