But hardly a surprise.

Disappointing but it indicates the team was built without much of a foundation.

So now we know what Jay Marriott has been busy doing whilst there's been no new episodes of The BBL Show over the last couple of weeks!
Gloucester Basketball in general has always come across a bit 'wanting to run before you can walk' to me. Always sad to see a team leave the BBL or WBBL though, especially after appointing a new dedicated WBBL coach for the new season.

Is it telling that they name the school they’re in partnership with and don’t mention the university? Also there is no mention of basketball on the University of Gloucestershire sport page. They use the university’s excellent facilities but there doesn’t seem to be any partnership in place or any particular interest in basketball from the university. Contrast that with the University of Worcester where it’s the first sport they mention.

Disappointing but it indicates the team was built without much of a foundation. This seems similar to what I said on the Caledonia thread of when a team has to much or not enough ambition. It sounded like Gloucester had a steady target of making it into the BBL and a women's team already there alongside which sort of made sense and seemed realistic. But it seems like an unusual reason as it was a player avaliablity thing rather then a financial issue affecting them. Sort of similar to Durham Wildcats when the league clamped up on having a BBL team made up of mostly uni students. I mean Plymouth last year were extinct and then resurrected just before the start of the season. Will any unsung hero now be on their way to save this franchise?

Plymouth had one of the biggest, most loyal fanbases already there though, I can’t see anyone else thinking a Gloucester franchise is viable

Gloucester have already said they fully intend to re-apply for the 2023/24 season… which will be the 3rd time they’ve attempted to join.

No fans, no venue, no money and now no players. Don't think there's any chance of them playing in the BBL any time soon then.

Yeah if I’m 777 I’d have been sceptical before yesterday, at this point I’m not even considering giving them a BBL spot

I don’t even think they should be talking about joining the BBL yet. This season they start in NBL D3 Southwest. They need to get themselves promoted to D2 North and start to build up rivalries with the Bristol clubs. Build up a player base and a fan base. They will be a welcome addition to basketball in the Southwest but I don’t think promotion to D1 will come easily. They might be able to use a couple of University of Gloucestershire players but no one is going UoG to play basketball. Worcester, Bath and Cardiff would all be more suitable cities for a professional team.

Gloucester is not a Northern city, so they should be in the Southern division, if promoted.

Bristol is further south than some of the Southern division sides.
Obviously the London area sides don't want to travel too far!

D2 North teams:
Bristol Academy Flyers. Bristol Basketball United. Bristol Hurricanes. Charnwood Riders. City of Birmingham Rockets. Doncaster Eagles. Encon Derbyshire Arrows. Leicester Warriors. Myerscough Academy. Nottingham Trent Hoods. St Helens Saints. Worcester Wolves.
12 teams. Only 3 in the North. 6 in the Midlands. 3 in Bristol.

I've got two good D2 sides within 30 minutes drive, so that may be where I go to watch live basketball this season.
IF D2 gets interesting I might even do a percentage league table :-)
