It's a big thing is the USA, the whole country still functions, unlike the UK!

They always have must see games on Christmas Day and for many, it's when the season really begins.

Seeing as 777 are all American style wonder when they will try a Christmas Day home game for Lions? Can only think of Rocks willing to be there.

not sure why you would think Rocks ahead of any other - money talks, box office teams in NBA play x-mas day fixtures so would be same if it was a thing here.
Plus christmas day sport fixtures were a thing in the uk once- if anyone has an interest in checking out football history, you will see Christmas games were a bigger thing in England than Scotland, though England stopped first. England stopped scheduling on x-mas day in the 50s - but they actually did a double header with a fixture reverse on boxing day! Scotland did not schedule on Christmas day - what they did was play games when Christmas day fell on a Saturday. That ended in the early 70s and no longer scheduled a saturday if it fell on the 25th. The tradition that lasted longer in scotland was the boxing day and the new years day games - especially the local derbys. As a kid I loved the Jan 1 games Morton v St Mirren. Small things like drink drive law changes and tv demands have killed those traditions off.

Traditionally New Year was a much bigger holiday and festival than Christmas Day in Scotland as your history post indicated. That's the only reason.

The rest of the games have now been announced. Bucks v Celtics and Warriors v Grizzlies stand out for me. Why do they always put the embarrassing Knicks on display on Christmas? I know it's a big market but they play nearly every year and they're just not that good. Most years they're downright awful.

It's tradition, similar to the Detroit Lions always play a NFL game on Thanksgiving day.

Meh. Tradition for me would be turkey, mince pies and a snooze after lunch before the Queen comes on. Not watching the Knicks stink up the joint when you could have several much better teams on instead!

Is it just coincidence that golden state have a piss easy schedule for the first several weeks? This used to happen for the Lakers when they were the team being marketed most too. Is this the NBA manipulating things to ensure their poster team gets off to a great start and sits atop the league at least for a while?

Is this the NBA manipulating things to ensure their poster team gets off to a great start and sits atop the league at least for a while? I do think there is something in this, I feel like the teams that everyone know is tanking often end up having an incredibly difficult schedule, this usually gets explained away by saying that they cannot play themselves so logically they are going to have the hardest schedule but I truly do believe the NBA are aware who they want making it far into the postseason and these fixture lists are not entirely random

Well in the end golden state will have to play all the other good teams of course, it just looks like the first few weeks they only have a handful of hard games. Then look at OKCs schedule - it's got a 3-17 start written all over it. I can't believe how many hard opponents there are to start the season.
I recall the Lakers used to get loads of home games to start with. Might be coincidence but it just looks a bit whiffy to me.

Remember a lot of teams are in multi purpose venues which means some dates are unavailable, also the travel logistics make a run of several away games a viable option.

They are doing more to reduce back to backs and travel, such as 2 games in a row at the same team, more effort to play both LA and NY teams back to back, etc. I don't think anyone has 4 games in 5 nights anymore. Yet these efforts haven't led to a reduction in injuries from what I can tell.

So big changes have been abound in the last week or so - how does that change your outlook for the rest of the season? Phoenix are back in the mix with KD on board, who knows if Dallas can be contenders with Kyrie and how long he will last there before wearing out his welcome. In the East the Nets are now out of the running, leaving the 3 horse race that is Boston, Milwaukee and Philly.
Mile High do you fancy Denver finally coming out of the West this year?
Nice to see the Kings doing well and almost certainly breaking their playoff drought (2006!!) Hoping OKC can squeak into the play-in but they've sat just outside it most of the season. No bother though, with Holmgren and another decent draft pick next season should be a good one.

Yes, I think Denver will win the Western conference, the trades last week made the side stronger, removing a player that was a defensive liability, and a negative influence in the locker room. Having watched, part, of most Nuggets games I'm surprised how poor some of the NBA sides actually are.
Boston will probably win the east and hopefully we get a Denver v Boston final.

How confident are you going up against a healthy Suns team, perhaps in the conference finals? CP3, Booker, KD, Ayton - that's quite the lineup! Remains to be seen how they perform but on paper, it must be a concern? Might even be a 2nd round matchup as the Suns don't have a great record so might end up in the 4 or 5 seed.
