It’s been announced that riders are not going to enter the Europe cup, so if they don’t qualify for the group stage of the Champions League, which they almost certainly won’t then that will be the end of their European adventure this year, seems a bit of a strange decision to me, but oh well Where has it been announced……not on their twitter or web site. Bradley Gains with Hoopsfix announced it on Twitter

So we are entering a competition too difficult to qualify into?
But with the added problem that in the unlikely event we did qualify we can't afford to play in it regardless?
Not the best situation

Seems rather pointless. If I was FIBA Europe I would tell them not to bother.

So we are entering a competition too difficult to qualify into? But with the added problem that in the unlikely event we did qualify we can't afford to play in it regardless? Not the best situation Setting aside the finance side of things you enter the BCL because it gives you an automatic place in Europe Cup. If you're going to go for it you want a guaranteed spot. So, much like last time, you're not realistically going in to the BCL it's just the way in to the Europe Cup. Obviously in this case they haven't been able to put the funding in place. But there's no obligation to take the Europe Cup spot when teams get knocked out of the BCL qualifying rounds. Don't know how common it is, but that's an option, so don't see why anyone would have a problem with them doing that. Other than Riders fans wanting to see them play!! With regards to chances of qualifying, if they'd got an ideal draw they'd have had a fighting chance. They'd probably have had to win 3 games as the underdog whatever the outcome of the draw but there are teams there they could beat. The chances of getting through the draw they got is pretty much zero. In terms of fulfilling fixtures, i have no real idea but my guess is that if they did qualify they would play. They would just maybe not be as expensive with signings as they would like to be (you'd expect teams that enter to want to spend the money to be competitive otherwise why bother) and they may essentially have to spend some money they don't really have. I'd guess they have some of the money there to be able to play just not quite enough. You can maybe fill that for a year to play the games.

RIDERS MEDIA - 18TH JULY 2022 Riders Measured Approach In Europe Earlier this month Leicester Riders confirmed they would take part in European competition in the form of the Champions League Qualification rounds again this season.
Managing Director Russell Levenston explains the decision to enter Europe in the Champions League competition this term.
“Our ambitions are to be competing at the top-level of Europe and believe champions league is the right competition for our club. We assessed the merits of us joining the FIBA Europe Cup if we don’t qualify but decided that wasn’t right for us.”
“Each competition comes with its own financial and logistical pressures, and believe the commercial level of the Champions League is the correct one for us.”
“We have to build the foundations, it’s a learning process for us. Our aim is to be competing on the European stage each season, but it’s pivotal that this is done within our means and in a measured and sustainable way to build on our successes.”
“I’d like to thank our sponsors for continuing to support us – particularly Jelson Homes, Morningside, Lumbers Jewellers and Hilton Hotels & Resorts.”
“We are all looking forward to the game against CSO Voluntari, they had great domestic success last season and it will prove a test for us.”

I understand the financial side comes into play but still.

I understand the financial side comes into play but still. To be honest whatever the European level the Leicester are still playing in Europe and if I was a Riders or Lions fan I'd be chuffed to see us hosting opponents from across the continent. I remember enjoying the Eagles European friendlies in pre season they had many seasons ago and I was hoping for more of this pre season tournament style since we have our own venue now. Rather that then USA Select,Team Northumbria or a friendly against a fellow BBL side etc...

Bit ambiguous really. Is he saying we opted out of Europe Cup this season due to a funding issue? Or is he saying we're simply not interested in that competition moving forward? Be very disappointed if it's the latter. Would be tantamount to turning our backs on Europe altogether.

Actually quite a few teams do that. This approach is allowed by FIBA Europe, so they must recognise that competing in Europe Cup incurs too much cost with too little reward for some clubs with a limited budget.

I know teams opt out of Europe Cup every year. I know it's not something we're going to get in trouble for, whatever the reason. Point is if we're saying it's BCL or nothing moving forward, it's likely to be nothing.
It's a vague statement. He touches on the financial side of things but also talks about BCL being 'the right competition for us.' The idea that a club which has been at the top of the sport in this country for 5-10 years now can't afford to compete in the bottom tier of European basketball is pretty deflating really. But if it is a simple case of us failing to secure the funding this year it's not the end of the world. Leaves the door open for a return in the near future. If there's some suggestion here that we're not that interested in Europe Cup then I'm really not sure when we can expect to see European basketball back in Leicester. To have a realistic shot of just qualifying for BCL, I imagine our budget will need to increase quite dramatically.

How on earth can that be called a “neutral venue”?

Lions played Treviso in their own building last year. Since they switched to this format a team from each qualifying section has usually had home advantage. I doubt the location will do much to impact Skopje's chances or ours.
