Fantastic initiative.
Incredible statistics quoted in the article. If true, one in ten ethnic minority Brits regularly plays basketball but only one in 160 white Brits regularly plays basketball. An ethnic minority Brit is 16 times more likely to play basketball than a white Brit.

I do think the sport as a whole needs to drive inclusivity and for once its towards white people - I still think basketball is viewed as a BAME sport by some. Arguably the 2 best players in the NBA (Jokic, Doncic) right now are white so there's no better time. In addition I think we need more girls playing the sport too, but crucially having somewhere to go with it after they reach a certain age and want to keep playing.

Ha, they've simply nicked Eagles Hoops for Health program and renamed it. Ah well they do say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Good to see, all the same.

I completely agree with all of your points. If basketball was more popular with the general population the people who would benefit the most are our best players now (Ovie Soko, Gabriel Olaseni) who should be richer and more famous than they are; and our future best players, many of whom are also likely to be black. At the moment many young people are playing basketball for fun but without any prospect of reaching their potential or having a career in the sport. The drive to popularise basketball doesn't even need to specifically target inclusivity except to include girls, because by growing participation the biggest increase in demographic is going to be white kids anyway simply because there are more of them. I believe the potential to increase female participation is huge. My daughters and their friends don't like netball but they love playing basketball. I see more and more girls playing basketball in the park (or a kind of basketball, netball hybrid game).

Netball is completely different anyway, it's like comparing snooker to pool or swimming to diving. It's been on TV more in recent times and I've tried but it's just not action packed enough for me. There's really nothing to say it has to be a girl's sport though, it's just society and culture that conditions us to think it is, much in the way we're conditioned to view pink as a girl's colour. It's just a colour at the end of the day! Point being perhaps more needs doing to get netball out of girls minds as "their" sport and basketball as for all.
You a fan of netball, Dexter?

No I’m not a netball fan. It’s just I was amused; I was on the court on my own killing some time. Some teenage girls turned up and started playing basketball at the other end, but kept calling held ball on each other. These girls had decided to go to the park to play basketball, but they have been taught how to play netball not basketball, so they were mixing up the two.
