Copper box is pretty crap to get to, doing my ticket sales counting on ticket master this year they were selling way, way more tickets on a Sunday than a Friday, I imagine because unless you’re local the prospect of getting to and from the arena after work on a Friday is just not appealing for people

OR Will the Lions play their European games at the Copper Box? Issue rather than non payment of venue this time is that Copper Box is getting a complete overhaul. Needs a new roof and electrics. They are looking to use it as a exhibition venue primarily rather than a sports hall - not that that should stop basketball being played there as the court is usually temporarily laid per game nowadays rather than the actual main floor.

. Good point so why not break that down. London is only so big because it has overgrown the surrounding towns and villages. Have those identities been lost? Although I've been there, I have no idea what area of London the copperbox sits, could they not incorporate that identity to build their own. Look what the royals did with the lav twins, instant identity. Outside of basketball look what united did with the asain player all those years ago, united became the football team in that continent. The Copper Box is in East London, and whilst rebranding themselves as an East London team might make them more identifiable and appealing to those in East London, they'd also be alienating them from 75% of the London population. As I said previously, in an ideal world the BBL would have North, South, East and West London teams, but the league just isn't in a position for that right now.

They are looking to use it as a exhibition venue primarily rather than a sports hall - not that that should stop basketball being played there as the court is usually temporarily laid per game nowadays rather than the actual main floor. It's also worth noting that the London Lions had a 10 year agreement with the Copper Box Arena which ends around now (although I thought it had another year to run). I'm not sure what the plans are for next season, but I do know that 777 Partners are doing everything they can for the Lions to remain at the Copper Box next season, at least in some capacity. UEL SportsDock doesn't meet FIBA European standards, although they've been known to show some flexible with the Europe Cup. Wembley Arena is a lot more expensive, and general availability is an issue too. The Copper Box ticks all the boxes for 777 Partners right now, and is seen as key to them continuing to build the London Lions into what they want them to be. My guess, and it's only a guess, is that London Lions will play at least some of their games at the Copper Box next season. EDIT: The Copper Box is hosting the Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup in November 2022, presumably it'll be available to London Lions until at least the end of the 2022 (so basically the first half of the 2022/23 season).

I agree in an ideal world there would be maybe four London BBL teams, and if basketball was a major sport in Britain that is how many London BBL teams there would be. So I think, long term, that should be the strategy of the BBL. But I guess that depends on whether 777 Partners has the ambition of making the BBL a major sports league or if they just want to make it a little bit better. For us, we will keep watching it either way, but for them, unless if grows substantially I don't see how they will ever get a return on their investment.
