For those who don't follow the NBA but might be interested, Finch has earned a multi year extension to coach Minnesota. www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/33718467/minnesota-timberwolves-sign-coach-chris-finch-multiyear-extensionThere was a lot of hoo har when he was hired as no one knew him and the woke wanted a black coach to get the opportunity. Nice to see Finch has proven he was a good choice. Getting the Timberwolves to the playoffs (assuming they don't blow the play in) is like winning the championship at numerous other teams. The Timberwolves don't make the playoffs, it's not part of their culture or values, they enjoy long summers - so this is quite remarkable really!

Massive respect to Chris Finch.
Now there's a one-time BBL coach with some bloody ambition!

Massive win against the Clippers. Got a good squad there. Edwards is absolutely fantastic.

Doesn't matter how good he gets, he'll always be a rep for a paper company in Reading to me

Finch led the T'wolves to a win over the Clippers in the play-in series, securing the 7th seed (where they finished anyway!) That was a very big win in front of a noisy home crowd. They'll be lucky to beat Memphis once in the first round, but somehow that doesn't matter. Just being there - this team is one of those, along with the Knicks, Kings and Pistons - they don't make the playoffs, hardly ever. So just being there is a big deal and you have to give Finch credit for getting them there.

There’s a lot to unpick here as I don’t really get what it means and hope my assumptions of it are false. Is being “woke” a negative? If so is wanting the leadership jobs in the nba to be reflective of the environment they work in really a negative thing?? I agree with the point of the thread in regards to celebrating Chris Finch, just unsure the above is relevant at all seen as he did get the job. Pretty sure that post is more positive if it doesn’t use divisive language like woke and appearing to disparage peoples hopes for equality and representation within workplaces.

Don't overthink it Sam - maybe you missed the uproar when David Vanterpool didn't get the job - the entire focus on that was that he was a black coach already on the team and should therefore be given the job. My point was simply that the Wolves did what any good employer would do and hired the best person for the job, not the person who ticks boxes. And Finch has proven he was the right choice (not saying Vanterpool wouldn't have had success either but no one can say they didn't pick well with Finch now he's got the results with a team that absolutely stunk under the previous coach).

For those who don't follow the NBA, Chris will be coaching the Western conference all star team in 2 weeks time. He has the Timberwolves joint top of the West standings, so well deserved!

Finch finished 3rd in the NBA coach of the year voting, it was recently announced. Considering all the hoo-har when he was hired its looking like a very good choice now, as he's also just led Minnesota to their first playoff series win in 20 years, sweeping the Phoenix Suns. He also picked up a bizarre injury near the end of last night's game, when a player ran into his leg and he suffered a ruptured tendon! Never seen a coach have to be helped off to the medical room before. Hopefully he'll be ok.
Meanwhile Nick Nurse's 76ers are in trouble, 3-1 down to the Knicks - so not much chance of a Finch-Nurse finals matchup this year, but I wouldn't rule it out in the future as they both have good teams.

Finch has signed a 4 year extension with the Timberwolves, so looks like he'll be around a while, or until he gets fired like half the coaches seem to be at the moment who don't deserve to be!
