Surrey up 15 nearing half time. Is that surprising people?

Surrey up 15 nearing half time. Is that surprising people? Honestly yes! Great win for Surrey if they make it although I would have expected this Lions team to be a force to be reckoned with. Unless the only thing their turning in for are their wages.

I always felt the 3rd quarter was where the Scorchers would traditionally fall apart so there’s still legs in this game …

Pffft damm! I dunno what to say to this result. No disrespect to Surrey but I doubt anyone would have predicted the defending champions even with a much weaker roster would lose on the opening night of the season.
When I checked the scoreline about 7 minutes in the 4th Quarter I saw 89ers were ahead by over 20 points so would love to know what happened in that 4th Quarter that saw Lions bring it back within 2.
On the positive things if this is how London are expected to be then I actually look forward to seeing us play the Lions at the VMA this season instead of dreading a 50 point beatdown.

Honestly, it felt to me like the Lions were playing beneath themselves. I’m no expert, but it looked to me like there was no chemistry developed yet.
I guess some of London’s players are only just through the door whereas Surrey have had a relatively lengthy pre-season in SLB terms - plus all the brits on that Niners team were there last year, and 3 of the imports have played in Surrey before as well.
As to what happened to allow a 20+ point lead to evaporate, I have no idea. It’s just classic Surrey. All of a sudden, just nothing will go down for a cavalcade of reasons.
Ecstatic with the win in Niners’ 1st proper game. And, apologies for sounding bitter, but I truly hope this is an omen of how Lions’ season turns out. As long as they’re wearing black and Balan is around, they’re still going to stink of 777 to me.

The biggest upset was division one Ipswich beating the reigning euro cup champions!

Surrey surprised. London disappointed. Certainly a statement of intent from Surrey 89ers.
To be honest I’m not concerned about London, I still think they’ll be an extremely competitive team this season, just perhaps not in the SLB Trophy. But there’s a lot of good there - demonstrated by getting it down to just a 2 point loss, it’s just going to take some time (which is understandable given the situation). Delaire had a great opener (although looked thoroughly miserable throughout), as did Taylor and Rai as I’d expected, Soko was below expectations for me but hopefully it’ll just take him a while to get back to form.
Having said all of that, I don’t want to take anything away from Surrey. They impressed me, and I really hope they’re in for a great season this year.

The biggest upset was division one Ipswich beating the reigning euro cup champions! It’s a good headline, but let’s be honest the London Lions mens are a different team this year, but the London Lions Women are a TOTALLY different team this year (but at least there is one).

O absolutely but what Nick Drane has done in Ipswich is nothing short of amazing.

As long as they’re wearing black and Balan is around, they’re still going to stink of 777 to me. That’s how I saw it as well. They looked disjointed, committing lots of turnovers and they didn’t look connected on defence either. Every team is a work-in-progress at this stage and the Lions are no different. A lot of the Surrey players were with the Scorchers last year and I think that understanding made a difference. Cam Gooden was red hot and I was really impressed with what Dame Adelekun bought with his points and rebounds. Going five scoreless minutes is a bad habit that seems to have carried over from last year, it meant they were hanging on in a game that was never really that close. Lots to be pleased with for sure, but things to work on as well!

I wouldn’t take much from London from this game. They still have import slots to fill. Short handed yesterday with academy players filling in again. Technically their first game of the season.. the preseason game they did have they used the academy.
Expect to see a lot stronger Roster in a few weeks time with a few more signings.
Surrey looking much the same as last season. Gooden had a great game and the British big looks a good pick up. Expect them to be battling for the last playoff spot though.
