Sad to see this especially just after Bill Walton - seems like all these legends who paved the way are now being lost. I thought West was still in good health and still working as an advisor, so a bit surprised at the news but he was 86. Definitely one of the early top level legends along with Russell, Wilt and Oscar. A great executive as well, famously of course acquiring Kobe for the Lakers. He saw something in Kobe that others must not have given he only got drafted 13th and was then traded. It was a shame he didn't win more than 1 championship, especially for all the finals he appeared in. LeBron gets stick for his poor finals record but West's was abysmal, but he did have to contend with the Celtics a lot!

Legendary player and a largely very successful GM. If I recall rightly the only player to ever get finals MVP from the losing side. Mr Clutch and The Logo are not bad nicknames! NOw hes off to that basketball court in the sky I hope he has more luck when he finds a smiling Bill Russell waiting for him.
