What a finish to the game at Cheshire. Flyers almost got over the line. Great contest.

Gee, I've seen us lose by a lot before, and I've certainly seen us lose to the Lions before ... but I've never seen anything resembling a close to full strength Lions side that actually needed to win the game.
Bigger, faster, stronger. You name it. Obviously everyone is aware of the budget differences, but to see it play out first hand? Pretty wild.
Still. Scorchers in 3.

To round off all the game 1's so far it is...
Lions 1-0 Scorchers (80-65) Nix 1-0 Flyers (91-90) Gladiators 0-1 Eagles (78-91) Sharks 0-1 Riders (81-84)
So 2 teams maintained home court advantage and 2 teams lost the advantage.
If this was a 2 leg competition I would say both Lions and Eagles were safely through and the other 2 were all to play for.
However that being said I'm quite happy and glad that we are doing a best of 3 series instead as it means we're not getting any dead and meaningless games.
I hope fingers crossed Eagles can win game 2 and then Bristol can take and beat Nix in a Game 3 so we avoid Lions in the Semi Finals.

I really like the best of three format and it means that fans get a better deal. Wipe the slate clean after a defeat and do your damnedest to win game 2. Then it's all to play for in game 3 - much more exciting. It's also what the coaches and players are used to - basketball games aren't meant to end in a draw or use aggregate scores. And, if it goes to a third contest then fans have more basketball to watch and enjoy. I'm not looking forward to the season ending after the O2 final. Spin it out as long as possible. (Having said that, of course I want us to beat Sharks in the second game! The rest of the quarter finals can go to the third game though)

However since it is a best of 3 then it is probably a more frustrating loss for them if anything since they were so close.

So what have a learnt after yesterday… I think the outcome of the London/Surrey series is clear, but the other 3 series could easily go either way. The only thing that made the London/Surrey game interesting was how bad London were in Q4. London had such a sizeable lead that victory was never really in question, but allowing Surrey to go on a 14-0 run and to outscore London 21-7… in another game in another circumstance that could be dangerous. I do really like Surrey this season, shame we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do. Finally, I was dissatisfied not to see Justin Robinson yesterday, not even on the bench. Is he injured?

On a side note, I’ve noticed Surrey/London, Newcastle/Caledonia and Bristol/Cheshire are all scheduled for the same time on Friday night. The BBL production facilities only have the technical capacity to produce 2 games simultaneously - so will one game not be broadcast?

Phoenix don't seem to shut games out do they, though max credit to Bristol for changing it up and not giving up. Phoenix were nearly 20 up, with the Flyers in the foul and Brad Greene sat down with 4 fouls about 5 mins into the 3rd Qtr. And then.............. hang on for dear life. It reminds me a little of the last game at the Riders where they were up with both Teddy and Kimbal in the changing room and Leicester came back for the win. One question about the Nix is, can they adapt quick enough to changes in game that haven't been be planned??

Agree, with the aggregate format, 1 bad qtr or even one bad 3 or 4 minutes/a few bad calls can dictate the whole contest

I agree with aggregate format for ENBL because teams need to know their travel plans further in advance, but for BBL playoffs this is the best format.

Finally, I was dissatisfied not to see Justin Robinson yesterday, not even on the bench. Is he injured? Scorchers have been weirdly cryptic about all injuries this season so I don’t think anyone knows. He was among three players who missed our game on April 18th, being declared ill at the last minute. The other two returned and have played in every game since while Justin hasn’t even been seen on the sidelines. That’s as much as I know.

Firstly I meant to say I was disappointed, not dissatisfied - damn auto correct! I thought it was weird that I've seen no mention of his absence, or him, for a couple of weeks so thought maybe I'd missed an announcement or something.

Justin has still been at every home game - he is sat in the corner by the home bench with the injured Obukwelu.

True but let's be honest out of all the games which one is most likely to see an obvious winner? No disrespec to Surrey but if I was a neutral I would rather watch one of the 3 other games where it could go either way then watch an overpowering Lions side most likely bury them by 15-30 points. Although it wouldn't suprise me if Lions was to purposely put out their C squad in order to give players rest and keep it interesting. I mean if they did that they could purposely take it to a Game 3 at home and then gather some extra income if they lose on purpose.

True, I just think it’s a bit poor the league can’t manage to schedule the playoff games so that all of them can be broadcast. Also, in a somewhat cocky move, London have today started selling tickets for their home semifinal game on 12th May. And equally as cocky, they’re advertising it as their last home game of the season - so clearly they’re assuming they win the semifinals in just 2 games too!
