Busy old day in the BBL off season...
Obviously disappointed to lose Whelan but it was starting to seem increasingly unlikely that he'd be back. And I'd rather see him go to Gladiators than those lazy Geordie hacks. Would he be back in Leicester next season if we'd got our act together and made Europe work? Hard to say really without knowing what the extent of Gladiators' 'ambition' is or how much money they're willing/able to spend to get there.
When he first put pen to paper with Riders I really don't think anyone could have foreseen him having the impact he's had. No one batted an eyelid when he was first announced as our player. He was coming off back-to-back poor seasons in Spain and I was thinking maybe a decent, cheap bench player. Probably nothing more. To say that he exceeded those expectations would be an understatement. He's been a completely transformed player in a Riders' uniform. Whether he'll be quite as effective on another team remains to be seen but it certainly leaves us with a big hole to fill. In terms of value for money, I can't imagine there's been a better signing in the BBL the past two seasons.
Didn't realise Robinson was still pursuing a playing career. Thought he'd retired. Good add for Scorchers I reckon. Respected veteran who continued to perform well in a reduced role last time out at Lions and will potentially bring a bit of toughness and 'will to win' to a club that sorely needs it.
And TJ Lall... Well, who the f#ck knows really. BBL followers seldom have much to say about *new* signings and this one's clearly no different. Played in the Canadian college system up until the end of the 2022 season so has only had one year to pursue pro basketball overseas. Had an OK stint in the Japanese top tier last season. Didn't pull up any trees but it's a pretty strong league I think. Cheick Diallo (five years NBA experience) and Ekpe Udoh (seven years in the NBA, Euroleague winner with Fenerbahce) played on the same team. Has also been a decent-ish player in the CEBL, most notably with Guelph a few years ago. This is basically a long winded way of saying I've no idea whether he'll be good, bad or indifferent. Assuming Conner is back, plus Bowman and Walshe, that gives us quite a lot of rotation-worthy 'Brits' now. If we make good use of our import slots we could be quite deep next season. Albeit with a lot of new faces and a couple of guys with worrying injury histories.

Albeit with a lot of new faces and a couple of guys with worrying injury histories. Two or three observations: 1. Agree with you on Whelan, although having seen him in Spain his potential was clear. Signing him was terrific business for Leicester, and he’ll be a loss. But at least you will have the pleasure of knowing that Caledonia will be over-paying for him! 2. Riders will be fine despite personnel changes because they have an excellent and experienced coach who will make it so. 3. TJ Lyall - as you say, who knows, but I would be optimistic. Paternostro will have done his homework & he will have received a detailed appraisal from Kimbal who has been playing with him on the same team in the Canadian league. Now, back to those Geordie hacks for some more lazy recruitment 🙂

2 year deal as well! I presume even with an Irish passport he's still classed as an import?

Interesting, I would think then if he has the right to live/work in the UK he won't need a work permit potentially not making him an import. I think he'd represent Ireland, not GB. However per FIBA "A player who has competed in an official FIBA competition after reaching age 17 is tied to that country."

He played for Canada in their World Cup qualifiers as recently as February this year. I've listed him as an import but I don't know if that's right.

Canada have qualified for the World Cup. He seems like a really high quality player. We will have to wait and see if he is classed as an import. It could be argued either way.

Who is going to tell us the import status of their players, no one appears to have that responsibility. This is on the BBL website: “What is the BBL player eligibility criteria? In the summer of 2020 the BBL Clubs voted to change the player eligibility for BBL Competitions (to take effect in the 2020-21 season) to provide more opportunities to British players.” “The new eligibility allows teams to play a maximum of five over-18 non-British players per game. All remaining spots on the team have to be filled by British passport holders.” From this we can assume Conor Morgan is classified as an import but with the benefit of not having to get a work permit. The only twist could be that 777 Partners could change the rules from British to British or Irish if they want to add another import. There would be nothing usual about that if they did that imo.

Who is going to tell us the import status of their players, no one appears to have that responsibility. Unfortunately a lot of BBL clubs aren't particularly forthcoming with this type of information. I have to imagine there's someone on here clued up enough to know what Conor Morgan's status will be but we don't seem to have a definitive answer yet. Pretty confident I've got everyone else so far listed correctly.

Came back to look at this thread after the Eagles announced that tommorow we will find out our group for Europe then next week the fixtures.
I have to say though whilst we have signed a strong team, I reckon we going to need atleast 3 more players if we're going to juggle the BBL and Europe successfully. Right now we look dangerously low on personal so I'm hoping we have more signings to come.
Mind you looking at the rosters printed above I'm starting to think someone needs to remind the Giants that this isn't a 3 v 3 league as it seems like they have barely signed anyone right now?

Could be be that they'll have as many coaches as players. Can't see any quantity nor quality (Jamell apart) in that line up.
