The season has been in operation for months now and I wonder what others think about the lack of a salary cap for the BBL? Has it been good for the league? Does it destroy any hopes teams have of winning silverware, especially the league? Or is it compensated for by getting to watch players of Dekker's calibre in our arenas and halls?
Personally, I'm disappointed because there's just no realistic chance of any team except Lions winning the league no matter how hard they train or gel as a team. The money ploughed into London is totally disproportionate so at the back of my mind there's always the realisation that we are all competing to come second at best. That is like playing a game of roulette when you know your number's never going to come up. What's the point? Moreover, will 777 continue to invest the huge sums required for the long term and what if they pulled the financial plug? That's a worrying prospect. I know we get to see a British team competing in Europe but that isn't where my heart lies atm. It all feels fake because it could vanish suddenly, dashing all hopes of a steady growth in attendance at BBL games.

I understand your point mate but nothings changed in many ways.
For example this year London have spent 2.5 times what Leicester have which is really bad.
That being said 4 years ago Leicester spent 4 times what Manchester spent.
Neither were good for the league but one of these leaves us with world class players.

I think the truth is it's too early to say.
No question that competitive integrity has been damaged in the short run - as you say, is getting Sam Dekker in our arena enough compensation? The jury is out.
For this to work they need it to attract investment to other clubs. Obviously Glasgow/Caledonia now have a very rich and ambitious benefactor, and that will help on the professional competition front (genuinely think they'll be a comfortable second next year if, as has been suggested by the owners, Durham and Alihodzic are their 'floor' in terms of quality and finance - a very good GB player and a four year Hoosier who played Sweet 16 last year is not a bad start, and akin to Vince signing Fahro and Kevin Ware in London). But that arguably might have happened without London (though Steve Timoney suggests perhaps not...).
If in, say, 2 to 3 years there isn't a sustainable club in Manchester, if Plymouth has to back out as they can't compete, if there isn't a franchise with solid external backing in Birmingham or Leeds, then it's absolutely failed IMO.
I think it's very hard to split personal fandom of a club from this, and even more so for Riders fans.

I think it needed to happen for the good of the professional game in Britain, otherwise we'd just be fumbling along playing in leisure centres forever. I'm glad Glads have come along with some significant funding, hopefully have a Barcelona and Real Madrid situation for a while. Shame for me as an Eagles fan but at least we've had our time in the sun.

Shame for me as an Eagles fan but at least we've had our time in the sun. That is what I hope for too. A Barcelona and Real Madrid situation is a great place to be. If you look at Spanish basketball now they have about 6 teams on that level. Unicaja Malaga just won the Copa del Rey. Tenerife recently won the FIBA Intercontinental Cup. I believe if you get a big two, other teams will follow eventually.

To say. london has spent 2.5x leicester is not even close.
on publicised salaries last year if london are paying market value (and taxes and NI on top) they have to be between £5-7m.
no other bbl club touches the salary cap (in cup final build up Rob said that the salary cap was removed for one team only).
So that’s approx £300k.
so 2.5x is way off base

My base was from people within the Leicester organisation who told me their figure. It was much larger than i expected

Worth it. Watching players like dekker, Nelson, best, Taylor etc is a treat. Need to find ways to get all budgets up to lions size not cap the league… easier said than done.

Like Newcastle, my understanding is that Leicester’s budget is decent but not huge - and they seem to stick to it.

Dekker is on the same as Leicester roster but he does equate to nearly half of the lions roster too

I think the point made earlier that something had to change is persuasive and I have to admit that a part of me enjoys watching top quality individuals such as Dekker and Koufos playing in the UK. My anxiety is that the experiment may end suddenly before genuine change happens and there could be a horribly damaging effect on the BBL.

The issue with not having a salery cap is that if a few teams have budgets massively above those of the other clubs there is no longer a competitive balance and there is no reason for other clubs to stay involved. The history of the first USFL, from teh 1980's, is a perfect example of what happens in a league if there are no financial limits and balances.

Yeah this could go pop quickly, luckily there will be 4 clubs well run and managed who own their own arena which should safeguard against the very obvious worry

That’s a fair comment, but without 777 Partners I think we wouldn’t have Plymouth and probably wouldn’t have Manchester Giants either. So the league would be down to 8 teams which really isn’t good. I don’t think there is an alternative at the moment.

Unless of course Lions decide its not worth asking Dekker, Taylor and others to travel to far outposts of the league e.g. Eagles, Phoenix or Patroits. Or heaven forbid that the management decides that its a competition that they didn't really want to win. In both cases the majority of BBL supporters will miss out on that " treat" unless other teams manage to obtain budgets similar to Lions which is something clubs have been trying to do for 40+ years.

I don't like what lions have done mainly because I want to have the chance to win things. Until a few weeks ago this didn't seem likely but recent events have changed my view.
In the cup final when lions were I believe at full strength riders ran them close. It took dekker taking over the game and a couple of missed shots to finish us off. Riders had the chance to win.
In the trophy lions (and riders) are out so someone else has a chance to win.
So lions might end up with 3 trophies but this will only match what riders did last year. Is that worth the money?
If I want to see top players I watch the nba

I think their is a positive and negative to this. I can understand why having one team with big budget practically takeover can be bad for the league.
However at the same time if the BBL didn't transform or try things then it also cannot move forward.
The only way I can see 777 plan working is if genuinely other investors were to start looking at the BBL and also wanting to sponsor other teams in the league. I.e: if some big money investors were to suddenly sponsor Sheffield or Manchester for example you could then have multiple super teams and a whole new league.
Although I do question if their plan is a little over ambitious. But 3 years down the line they have atleast still stook around.

The players I listed aren’t nba players though. A counter anrgument could be to just go annd watch your nearest local league then?! Only dekker can compete at that level. There’s also a huge difference between watching live and nba on tv at midnight. If you want the standards in general to increase and it to grow in popularity the league needs players at their level surely?
