I am fairly new to following basketball closely so hope this isn’t a dumb question:
In tonight’s Scorchers game, it seemed like the Leicester Riders got a foul called against them for one of their players standing up while on the bench.
In my limited experience of attending games, players always stand up after a big dunk or long three, etc etc. Obviously you can also stand when you’re about to come into the game as well …
My brief googling to try and find the official FIBA/BBL rule has been unsuccessful, so I was wondering if anyone here would be able to please explain what the rule is about sitting/standing while on the bench? It’s not something I’d ever seen before.

It may have been if he stepped on to the court, or perhaps let slip an expletive that you didn't hear, rather than just for standing up?

It may have been if he stepped on to the court, or perhaps let slip an expletive that you didn't hear, rather than just for standing up? It was stated by the comms team that it was due to Thornton standing up. No way did he encroach onto the court as the advertising hoardings were in front of the bench. I was amazed at the time as I have seen players rising to their feet hundreds of times during games. One can only assume it was something that was said……which means it could have been anyone on the bench, it just happened to be Thornton who was standing at the time…. Livestats has it down as a bench technical…..with 58secs to play in Q1. ** Just watched it again and the next Scorchers play resulted in an and-1 play…..at least two Scorchers players get to their feet…..NO BENCH TECHNICAL. Must have been for verbals I guess.

Only the coach is allowed to stand, even assistants must be seated. A rule that isnt often enforced but is stull a rule

Very rarely do the refs issue a technical for just standing up. Excessive towel waving, noise, or exaggerated celebration often brings a warning which is then forgotten about. Offering an opinion on referees eyesight, impartiality or parentage usually does bring a response however.

I've been reading the rules out of idle curiosity and It's all on page 17 from the online book. Only one of the head coach and first assistannt coach is allowed to stand at any given time. Obviously this is regularly broken and ignored so I'd assume something was said. I don't remember the play exactly but I would guess that the player questioned the referee's competence in an unfriendly manner in addition to standing up. Edit: link for anyone that cares www.fiba.basketball/documents

It seems like a dumb rule if you ask me and it's rare I have seen refs enforce it. To me as long you don't go invading the court during the play like I saw Worcester do once or gesture anything inappropriate then teams should be allowed to celebrate. So long as it does not interfere with play.

Thanks for all your help, guys. I re-watched the stream after reading these comments and I'm 99% sure Thornton said something as the ref was going past him. He stood up in view of the refs and nothing happens, then he seems to be appealing for a foul that wasn't given, and then only when the ref is going past does he blow his whistle so it's got to be that.
Interesting to learn about the unenforced standing rule though too.

I remember a game, not sure who was playing but a player's brother invaded the court and tried to go after an opposition player.
Think it happened at Rocks too and they had to put up a barrier to prevent it happening again

Ahhhhhh that was a long long time ago that was. Difficult to give a Technical to a member of the crowd though.

Raiders got a tech for it (back when that was 2 fts) and lost by 1 point

I can recall fans getting Td up. It goes down as a bench technical. It's very rare, the guy I knew who got one was dead chuffed with it. 🤣

I vaguely remember a fan being escorted out of the John Sandford for walking down to half court to give abuse to one of the referees. Couldn't tell you if there was a punishment for the team, but we were so bad that the game was likely well out of reach already anyway.

In my early days of going to Rocks games there was a loudmouth supporter, an old fella with a stick, he used to give the officials pelters, but he never once got ejected.

If there are issues with the crowd, the officials inform the game promoter and it's their responsibility to address it. as to standing on the bench - its all down to interpretations of whats acceptable and whats not. If your bench are a jack in the box each time a teammate puts up a three thats just taken as part of the game these days. if your bench are up on their feet for every minor incidental contact and waving arms all over the place and screaming at the officials - thats going to get a different reaction and a reminder about no standing and warning that a bench T if it continues.

Difficult situation if the "Game Promotor" etc is the person causing the issues :-)

I remember getting a telling off once way back in the Worthing Bears days, by then owner Christian "bellend" Hamilton (unofficial nickname). I asked a ref after the game on the court, without using profanity or being aggressive, why they didn't call a violation (forget what it was now) on the other team in the final minute which may well have cost us the game. It was clear as day so not a 50-50 or anything.
Ref basically blanked me and walked away then as I'm on my way out the building, in a fairly big crowd of people leaving, Hamilton pushes his way through to me to say he'd been asked to tell me not to approach the refs again like that!
What an arse, he should be having a go at them himself and backing his fans up, not pandering to them like that. I told him that too and he didn't know what to say. I was about 17 at the time lol.
Or referee how about you grow a spine and tell me to my face? Twa....twit.😇
