This Friday 13th January there are 3 BBL Trophy games. Sky Sports are not broadcasting these. I don’t think there was ever any intention to broadcast BBL Trophy games other than the final. The games are Bristol Flyers vs Surrey Scorchers. Caledonia Gladiators vs Newcastle Eagles. Derby Trailblazers vs Basketball Wales. These are not at the any of 5 venues that Sky Sports use.
Next Friday 20th January, Friday night BBL on Sky Sports returns. Sky Sports Arena 7.30pm-10pm Sheffield Sharks vs Bristol Flyers in the BBL Championship.

As above, it’ll be back. The Sky coverage (along with league games) started earlier this season - in September, not the usual December, so in terms of number of games broadcast we’re ahead of this time last year so there’s just a need for a little break - and Christmas/New Year/the Trophy first round provides the ideal opportunity for that.
The Sky coverage has only ever included Championship games (apart from the finals), and the deal is for X number of games each season. So taking all this into account there’s no reason for concern here, and we’ll see just as many games on Sky this season as we’ve seen the previous two.

As the line up and schedule for the play-offs isn't know yet it's very hard to publish a broadcast schedule for those games. Sky also need to balance the costs of producing the coverage against the subscriber and advertiser revenue they gain from showing the games. Just to correct you on a fairly significant point… Sky don’t produce the coverage of these games, nor do they (directly) cover the costs. The BBL pay production company Buzz 16 to provide coverage of X games per season. The BBL then provide this coverage that they’ve paid for to Sky (or any other broadcaster they so choose if the deal is right for them). In return Sky pay the BBL for this coverage, which I believe covers the cost for the BBL and provides a very small profit. But what the BBL is really getting out of this arrangement is national television exposure. Of course Sky have to be happy with the deal too, but they’re paying (comparatively) peanuts for coverage that is provided to them ready to air. As long as it’s not a total disaster in the ratings for them then they’ll be happy to be able to include another sport in their portfolio.

at least its not another chance to admire the blue curtain behind the team benches in Sheffield The problem with BBL games at Sheffield on Sky Sports is not the blue curtains (although I’m sure someone could straighten them out to make it look a bit neater). The problem is the games are so boring, even the fans seem bored, half of them so bored they stayed at home.

We're getting plenty of opportunity to see Lions next month. Hmmm. I am of course totally biased, but in my biased opinion Lions away games are the best games for Sky Sports to broadcast. Each one is like a cup final.

To be fair I swear it was the same last season when Riders were dominating the league. Last season they aired alot of Riders games week after week. I'm guessing they want to try and showcase the number 1 team in the league as much as they can.

Realistically Sky/BBL's priority is to attract as many viewers as possible, not please as many teams fans as possible.
Like it or not, Lions naturally have the best product to pull in those viewers

Tonight’s game is a straight head to head which 777 Partners should take interest in. On Sky Sports at the same time we have
Leicester Riders vs London Lions
and
Manchester Thunder vs Loughborough Lightning
The netball game will get more views but it is a good benchmark from a sport that is quite popular. It will also be interesting to see if Thunder are able to sell out the NBPC.

I can’t speak for Manchester and the NBPC, but having seen a little bit of London Pulse on Sky Sports this season you can clearly see the crowds at the Copper Box are now much bigger for basketball than they are netball.

Yes I have noticed that which is great to see. It’s the other way round at the NBPC by the looks of it.

So at the end of the night the Sky Sports YouTube viewing numbers are in for the head to head… basketball 5.9K viewers, netball 9.5K viewers. Obviously those numbers will change a bit over the next couple of days, and don’t take into account those watching either on actual television. But there’s still a gap, with netball coming out on top, however that gap isn’t a big as it was a couple of years ago which is a good sign.

its small (and petty) but maybe need to not have basketball promote netball as looked like they didn't want to promote basketball - I have seen basketball fixtures advertised as being at a netball centre (Loughborough if I recall right)
I noticed last nights netball on sky listings was from Belle Vue Arena - so did switch on for a few min to see what the venue was like assuming it was a place i'd not not seen before, just to see it was actually the NBPC and the camera work meant you saw a hall that seemed bereft of basketballengland evidence
it did look full

when netball run a league from september to may it will be a fair comparison. At the moment it’s apples and oranges.

The same fixtures from last year on the Sky Sports YouTube channel now have Manchester Thunder vs Loughborough Lightning 26k views London Lions vs Leicester Riders 7k views (the reverse fixture wasn’t on Sky Sports) And that is how it was last year. The BBL was getting about a quarter of the views netball was getting. Last night’s game it got more than half. On this basis it seems that the BBL’s popularity has doubled. I think we can assume netball’s popularity hasn’t decreased so it makes a useful benchmark.
