Hi guys after the past 2 GB games in Newcastle having such a huge away following. It got me thinking what are peoples views and experience on travelling to away matches not counting finals.
If I'm honest in my time following the Eagles the only away match outside a final I have been to was Sheffield away in 2017 back when they played at the EIS which was a quiet game which we won.
I understand that for most the BBL community away matches and travel is rare except on really really big games. And some fans may only travel for one off matches such as Eagles vs Riders etc...
Does anyone think all BBL teams will one day have huge entourages?

Huge entourages, probably not but apart from Lions last year, (Pat must have been busy) every team visiting Nix last season had supporters with them. Giants obviously had the most but Riders always have a fair number. Few less from Eagles but understandable last season but kudos to the two fellas who made the trip from Scorchers considering their season. I think all teams have their regular away supporters, I recognise most of them as I'm the one with the "ask me" pole by the ticket desks.....say hello if you're up at the EPSV this season. Interestingly the Nix are planning to have seats for supporters on the team coach for all away games this season, something we haven't done for a few years, it'll make a change from the usual 2/3 wonderful ladies with their drums!

I can go back to the 90s and while I wouldn't say there were big numbers of away fans, Worthing ran at least one coach of fans to most venues, impressive considering the team sucked (late 90s) and the travel was from right down on the South coast. But I also remember reasonable numbers traveling down to Worthing from places like Manchester, Sheffield and Derby. Enough for the away team to feel they had some support anyway.
After the team moved to Brighton I don't recall coaches being laid on except for finals and playoff games at neutral venues. Some fans still travelled but made their own way.

Clubs wont have huge away support until they have a buge number of basketball fans.
At any given club, the supporters are fans of the club not the sport. Nothing wrong with that at all but i think it stops huge numbers travelling.
When i had a club, Leicester had the biggest away support. Once say them bring 15 fans to a d3 game

Dob teams still have fan clubs? I remember Worthing had a very good fan club and volunteers organised and promoted the away travel, which no doubt helped boost numbers. To run a coach, sometimes two, you'd need at least about 30-40 fans going and they seemed to regularly achieve that, even in the absolutely dire 98-99 season.

I know the Eagles have a regular fan following to away games even all the way to Plymouth surprisingly!
As for visitors to us I think the biggest followings I have seen were in my early seasons as a fan when I same the Plymouth Raiders bring an army of fans to the Trophy Final back when it was 2 legs home/away. Then I saw Riders bring an even bigger following of fans to Sports Central 2 seasons later in the playoff semi finals.
Last season I think the most away fans I saw was actually the Flyers over Easter weekend had a good following which was great to see. Although last year was probably the best time for any away squad to visit us given how poor we were.

If you were to include finals then we didn't too bad in Glasgow a few months ago.

Im sure that Dave Forrester was one of them and also an ex-whatsbev poster by the name of bada-bing.

Newcastle always bought ridiculously loud fans to Brum (some more than others..... š§š»āš¦°) Do clubs tend to give discount? Travel? I remember back in the stone age when we actually had a team, we ended up with away tickets from using the players guestlist

Good experience? Presumably taking notes for when Scorchers reach their next cup/ trophy final.
Thanks for that nice comment, see you this season?

Wow, there's a blast from the past, bada bing. Very few of the old brigade are still around now, either here or on Bev. Although I noticed a certain old timer returning this week as 'sharkball'!

We combined a family visit with Plymouth last year, and there were plenty of away fans ! Having said that my main away memories are the brick walls behind the baskets at Northgate Arena and the easy to find Ponds Forge.

Try the new EPSV, no brick walls, a newly coated floor AND real lighting you can see the game.

Bada bing is Paul Nielsen; I used to contribute a fair bit when he had the website/blog under that name. He's rather busy these days working in the women's game.

I've been to the following away venues as well as the O2
Cheshire: Got a really friendly welcome from Reallyoldfeenixfan there. Not especially for me. But he was there to greet all the away fans and help them with anything. Nice touch
Leeds: Not a lot you can say. Like watching a University or kids match
Giants: Freezing cold
Sharks: Big blue hall - craziest court I've ever seen
Sharks normal arena: Enjoyed Mike Shaft on the microphone
Wolves: big crowd. Decent atmosphere
Lions: the Olympic Arena was way too big for the amount of fans they had.
Plymouth: loved watching basketball in the Pavilions. They've also got the best cheerleaders I've seen
Eagles: Had a real buzz about the place. Proper sports atmosphere. Best atmosphere of the lot. This was before the new arena.
Think that's everywhere I have been.
Always been plenty of Riders fans at all of the games and we made decent noise at all of them.
Think we won all but one game which was Sharks in Playoffs in their normal arena. So that's helped with the enjoyment above.
I remember Eagles used to make plenty of noise in the old days at our place. Not so much now

Always happy to help. Already been dusting and polishing my "welcome" pole.
