So with the new season fast approaching and lots of changes of court i thought i would start a thread on what the Podcast world is looking like for this coming season. Thought it might be helful for spreading the love / introducing new people to British basketball pods / commenting on current and new pods
As a starter for ten here are some of the first ones:
* Sunday Night Breakdown
Hosted by "the voice" of British basketball commentary Dan Routledge and Dave Forrester who is probably one of the most successful Assistant coaches in BBL history, it is a instant review of all the weekends action with game by game reviews and commentary. Generally sticks to the matches just played but great insight from 2 very experienced and knowledgeable people in British basketball. I'm sure many might skip through some of the games until they find the one they are interested in but is a staple for many basketball fans who are interested in the league as a whole and a great listen on the commute to work on a Monday morning.
I've not seen any indication that this will continue or stop and hasn't published anything since the BBL final in May. Personally I've got my fingers crossed that normal service resumes next Monday morning!
* Drew & Jay
This one has gone through a few iterations from being an independent to then being the 'official' BBL Show' then back to being an independent. They have returned for the new season but seemed to be broadening their scope with the concept of "travelling around the globe " (metaphorically not physically) with guests associated with British Basketball to talk about their experiences. I'm guessing it will still be topical, but will be interesting to hear their views after being very pro British Basketball League in the 777 / Aaran Radin era; having taken some heat last year as fans started to call out the issues with the league ownership and the dominance of Lions and the first episode this year is an awkward listen with Jay defending his views on being so pro that era and still not really acknowledging some of the s**t show that it ended up being, whilst Drew was very honest in his appraisal, even sharing some of his experiences in those last few weeks of the season.
Not my go to listen at all but have had some really interesting guests in the past (see the Paul Blake one last year as a good example) and i definitely think this forthcoming approach being guest led is a positive move.
*Below the Rim (BTR)
Well if J&D was pro 777 then this was a stark opposite. Led by a very forthright Plymouth and 90's BBL fan, Pabz, it strayed into some very ranty episodes over the last few years. However after a number of different guest line ups it certainly landed a great co-host in Grant from the Glad cast, who although was a Gladiators fan was very knowledgeable about the league and had a pretty balanced view across the teams.
So...thankfully the BTR seems to have returned in a refreshed mode with Grant seemingly now leading the pod with some really interesting, knowledgeable, and (most importantly) balanced views with new co-host Louis (Prophesy on twitter) and Matt Hardy (British Basketball Daily).
First 3 episodes this season have been a marked improvement and a great topical podcast wit all things SLB that week. Its still a little bit long, generally 1hour 20min plus in length) but the move away from a quite parochial (too many in jokes) pod is a great move.
* Hoopsfix
Unfortunately these podcast episodes are becoming few and far between as Sam always has great guests, is always prepped with some great questions and delivers them in a way that positive challenges how and why basketball is what it is in Britain and always feels like his angle is to make things better in the UK. They are rarely topical therefore i urge people to go back and listen to some of the back catalogue as there are some fantastic interview on there.
Again i've got all my fingers and toes crossed that Sam manages to get more content out in the next 12 months as he has fast become the most trustworthy newsagent of all things british basketball in recent years.
I'm sure there are others i've missed so i hope we extend the list.
Also these are my views of the podcasts and its not meant to offend or promote just a reference point for those that don't currently listen or watch, and as a fan of basketball in this country we want as much good quality content as possible across all formats
