With the new season approaching and after watching the Olympics it got me thinking about where would the best place TV wise should the new league be advertised on?
The past 3 seasons the league has been on Sky Sports and YouTube. Although the NBA have now started putting occasional games on BBC Three during last season.
I believe one of the reasons for the YouTube coverage was to help avoid putting the league up behind a pay wall. And for regular fans I think it's great as it means we get access to watch all our teams away matches and any other games we want to watch. But is it working in terms of building the sports profile?

Honestly, for this season its not important at all. Get a league running and worry about all of that in Year 2

I actually think it should be the BBC's duty to showcase British sports, especially one's that are not quite developed enough to be attractive to sports broadcasters. I have no idea why BBC wants to be showing NBA.
For this season it would be nice if anyone streams Super League Basketball games.
I have been tracking BBL YouTube views over the last few years. Viewing figures are not increasing. The total number of BBL fans is pretty low. The build it and they will come approach hasn't worked. I don't know what the answer is. Maybe British basketball will have a Caitlyn Clark moment and become mainstream overnight. If it's being broadcast there's always a chance. If the wider public are not able to see it that's never going to happen.

Asides from the Olympics you can't always showcase every sport if your the BBC unless you were to have a dedicated sports channel. Even if the league is new they need to have the league on some form of terrestrial tv if they want to grow or gain further fans and publicity. Looking back at the stateside deals from last season. Would Sharks and Nix have gotten their latest investors? If not Sky the BBC might be a good place for it. I mean look at what they have done for women's football in helping them raise the profile of the sport.

I mean look at what they have done for women's football in helping them raise the profile of the sport. What the BBC has done for women's football is really amazing, but there definitely was already the potential there and promoting women's football was a popular with a lot of people (also very unpopular with a lot of people). Also, the Women's Super League is one of the top women's football leagues and the Lionesses are one of the best teams. Basketball in the UK just isn't comparable. Having said all that I do think the BBC should support and promote British basketball. In terms of what other sports should they support, I don't know. That's up to other sports to make their case. I would like a BBC sports channel if they just showed sports, but I don't think the BBC are capable of that. They would want to pay a load of presenters and pundits to talk rather than show the game. The BBC is the worst sports broadcaster in my opinion.

There's so many other niche sports where fans would say the same unfortunately. Whilst a good attendance for an SBL team is still less than plenty of non-league football teams get, I can't see the clamour for anyone to showcase British basketball. The only reason Sky even happened was because 777 were (presumably) footing the bill and letting Sky broadcast it free of charge. The best solution would be for a company with actual money and deep pockets to foot the bill for marketing purposes, like what Red Bull TV do with mountain biking, snowboarding etc. but I'm not sure we really have that appeal.

It’s not surprising how often this site redoes topics that were done to death on Bev. It’s also pretty depressing as the reason these topics keep coming up is they don’t get solved!!
Free to air, particularly the BBC, would be British basketballs best chance of expanding to a new fan base.
If they were showing games their website coverage would step up. Not long back (maybe even still happens) they had a weekly show on netball on R5……yup Netball. Think it was a podcast too.
Not likely to happen though. They don’t seem to have any money after paying dodgy newsreaders who don’t work for them!!

After all the investment as well in broadcasting last season and for no Sky Sports deal it does make me wonder what the plans are to get the league out there? If not Sky or BBC then why not Channel 4 Channel 5 or even Dave? I know it sounds wild but I once saw a boxing match with David Haye on the comedy channel Dave which doesn't put it outside the realms of possibility.

I was not citicising you for asking the question....merely commenting on how depressing it is that you still need to :-) It is just such a shame that the BBL, and it will likley be the same for the new league, has never managed to get a steady home on any channel really.
Any free to air channel would be great. The BBC still has the highest profile though and comes with a popular sports website and Radio 5 live which has a decent amount of reach sports wise at weekends and evenings.
I once spoke to Kevin Cadle and Alton Byrd on radio 5 once many, many, many moons ago. In fact if I recall rightly Alton Byrd may have hosted an "American Sports" round up show in it's early days........

I should clarify, I do think the BBC is the worst sports broadcaster on TV, but I love BBC Radio, especially 5 Live, and I like the BBC Sport website.

Watched DAZN today. Some hitches but generally fine. Ant Rowe & Dan Routledge on commentary.
